Like Alex M I too have an Afra pup, except it is a daughter of Ubo v Haus Antverpa and 16 mths old... She has always lived in the house and was HB by 9 weeks old. She is still crated when not supervised...but otherwise she is loose w/us. She does have extreme drives and now is in a teen bratty stage, but still is great in the house... although I always make sure she is well exercised in addition to training..
She was, at first, vocally reactive to outside noises but has gotten a lot better with it.
She even has napped w/me on the couch, never leaving me no matter who walks through the room... . Hubby calls it guard duty He also built & installed some nice hardwood gates with latches in the interior doorways of Home office and family room to better control her movements when she was small (never has chewed). We still use the gates when it is known the front door is not certained to stay shut.. (However, the funny thing is she hasn't figured it out that she can easily fly over them if she wanted too (only 33" high off floor...but I expect it will not be to long)
Will she ever be a lie-by-the-fireplace-type-of-dog???...Never... but's that come with the terrority of owning this GSD type. Top concerns should definitley be sound temperament, health and drives
It has been a blast to have her in the house as well out in the field.
Hey Alex!! Did you hear Afra is training for SchH3?
I'll just add my two cents: my working line GSD, Oka, is now 2-1/2 and calming down, but has never really been a problem. He had no off switch as a pup, but that's what the crate's for.
Oka's even good with my four cats--at least from my perspective: only one of them seems to enjoy being gently chewed on or paw-squashed, and that one ends up sleeping curled up against Oka fairly often. But he's part Siamese, and thus rather dog-like anyway.
