I have to agree with the last 2 posters that hackling can just mean excitement and not be related to weak nerves at all. I'd say when my dogs are playing and chasing each other in the yard, they are more inclined to have their fur up on their back then NOT. And my girls have never had a fight and they are obviously playing with the teasing and bowing and invitations to chase going on in between. The more rough and exciting the play, the more likely the hackling.
So, it's a matter of knowing your dogs and the entirety of the circumstances, rather than a hackling = weak nerves/ .
Intelligent dogs rarely want to please people whom they do not respect --- W.R. Koehler
<And yes I've seen many who out of sheer fear or lack of confidence or high suspicion/defense...hackle up...BUT I've also seen some which were definitely weak nerved and highly defensive/suspicious and unpredictable...NEVER display piloerection....>
My dog has been described as having a high defensive drive/maybe a touch of weak nerves (don't know for sure) "terminology".
She is very suspicious. I read her by watching her. She will stare, or focus, on what she doesn't like. No growling unless she is feeling threatened. She is alway watching. Catches every movement and every sound. Ready to rumble if challenged, but doesn't really go looking for fights.
