Paula,
the material in Nylabones is inert, and will pass through your dog without harm when they ingest it ( smart question though ).
A forum member Betty Waldron showed me a neat trick for a tough dog toy - she uses the tires off a small airplane for the dogs to play with. My herd plays "keep-away" with those tires and they're big enough to stand up to rough play.
The nose gear and main gear tires on light planes are relatively small. The nose gear typically runs on a 5" rim with the mains using a 6" rim. That's roughly the same size as a large wheelbarrow tire.
They are small enough to make a toy for big dogs.
To find them, go to your local airport and look for the maintenance shop. Ask if they have any old tires lying around. Since they would otherwise have pay for disposal, they will likely
be glad to give you a couple.
You can get them new at http://www.desser.com/. A Goodyear 600x6 Flight Custom III runs about $120. The 500x6 is a bargin at $70.
Do these tires have steel reinforcement in the sidewalls? If so I'd avoid them. If you can find some that have cotton or dacron reinforcement they'd be fine.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
I got him a tire toy once. It was made of really cheap rubber and it ripped apart when I played tug with him. I really can`t afford the airplane tires. He is currently working on a black kong I got him yesterday. So far he`s made a dent in everything but the kong playing with it.
I think the tire would be great for him but I am not too sure I want him dragging a tire through my house and all over my carpets. LOL. I need things to keep him busy in the house. I think I will try the black kong also.
Thanks
Yeah, I thought the black Kongs were supposed to be tougher. I'm on my third one now  . At this point, I don't trust the dog with ANYTHING while he is alone. Even the large knuckle or leg bones. Within a few days, he is usually through the ends and biting small pieces off the end.
