I have a don grandson and have been linebreeding on don for some time. So far with very few problems. I don't breed for sport dogs, but for a family pet, and I like a more laid back dog. I have noticed when I cross with west show lines sometimes I get a sharp shy dog in male puppies.. I find them naturally protective with a mild soft temperament easy for training with very good tracking, scenting and akc obedience work, with little to no health problems, my male has done bite work with good hard full grips, but I am mostly into akc obedience and I do alot of crossing with my old american line(not show lines)
Over the Years I have had many Don sons and grandsons. I bought over many Don sons that went to PDs in the late 80s. The real truth to Don was that he was the best hip producer ever in the Old DDR system. He made really large dogs with nice heads and real bone, Late to mature with not so much drive, You had to get a dog out of him from a super bitch to have anything. He did produce size and hips and thats about all
I have had the pleasure to work Don and also owned a son off of him. He was the first son that was brought into the US. This was back in the mid eighties. I also worked a few other sons as well as two females off of Don. I liked all of the dogs....my own son was very handler sensitive in obedience, but that was due to the barbaric East German training methids. But...he was also a 100 point protection dog. The helpers that sleeved him still use hmn as a comparison when they are trying to describe dogs to me. I had no medical problems and never saw anything weird with Don...who by the way was an awesome animal.
