They also love to breed them. What I have found interesting is they all seem to believe that the way to breed nice, mean pits are to breed brothers and sisters to each other
David, if you didn't hit that on the damn nail!! If I had a dollar for everytime I seen just that with the punks, I'd have Bill Gates working as my butler!
This may sound stupid- If you were to have a dog that is restricted by the bsl laws but said it was a different breed or a mutt -but obviously it is a pure Dobermann (or other)- Who is to say that is isn't the breed you claim?
They already have a way. In counties across America where it is becoming unlawful to have this wonderful dog (due to horse $h-^ of society) If they think they have found a full blooded one, or a cross, and the owner claims otherwise, then it is left to a DVM that works for the county to make the expertise call. The animal control officers are trained in spotting these types of dogs also, although they can only bring the case to light, a DVM has to make the call.
We're fighting this here now, especially with insurance companies. In my hood, punks and pits are all over the place. My brother and I have gone so far as to "rescue" a few of them from these a$$holes. My brothers pit is one of these "rescues" She's a little red/rednose with scars, a crooked leg, and one eye dialates when she gets excited (head injury?). She's still a sweetheart in spite of a $#!+ uprasing. My daughter was almost tossed by her insurance company but she convinced him her all white w/black spotted, natural eared pit was a Dalmation mix. The Schutzhund club I belong to has many, gamebred dogs who wouldn't bite for real if there lives depended on it. http://www.rwdc.org
Maybe both! I have a gsd and soon a dobermann. I may be moving to Georgia and they have a few laws over there. Aren't these decisions to own certain breeds a basic freedom we are supposed to have? Call me crazy...

Alison,
Unless you live directly in the city of Atlanta, you'll find that dog laws in Georgia are fairly relaxed and that BSL is fought pretty vigorously by folks. There's still the occasional idiot legislator that introduces stupid "feel good" laws that just sound good but don't solve any problems, but for the most part this state is pretty darn cool.
Plus we have nice low taxes and excellent gun laws ( read freedom <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) and kick-a*s weather. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
