i'm confused, how many dogs were there originally? arent all dogs relatives of another, based off of mixed breeding and then forming a new breed with specifications, for instance, the doberman...How can u say only pure bred animals, when if that was always the case, wed have 1 species of animal..no GSD, no rotts, no terriers, no poodles, nothing..isnt that a little..i dunno, but it really pisses me off.

2nd, yes, i can handle the mix, hes 5 months and a week right now, and hes the nicest dog, he hasnt ever had a problem on a leash, or putting on his collar, first night i put on his collar he never even scratched it. He walks on a leash better than any other dog ive ever had, and those are purebred poodles, toy and minature. He also listens extremely well on commands, and already is really protective of me, and of the yard. I dont see the problem with mix breeds, if you take the responsibilty, liek any other dog.

A Purebred GSD bitch with working lines doesnt mean anything if a mix breed hops the fence while shes in heat and does the deed, its all about responsibility, if you get your dog spaded, when puppies arent logical or wanted, then thats responsible, no matter what breed or mix breed.

By saying that remark, your judging everyone that has ever owned a mix breed the same, which is just as bad as saying prong collars are for tortue, or any other peice of equipment. I think next time before you talk -Christine Brayshaw-- you shuold really consider what your saying, because allthough your intentions may be good, you dont know every individual situation, let alone the dogs in question, i know many people on these sites have mixed breeds, and are perfectly happy, and i know that pure breeds sometimes get "over bred" and get psychotic and things of tha tnature, sometimes a mix breed is a good change.

JB, get real...The fact of the matter is that there are thousands of puppies and adult dogs put to death all around this country (and others) that WERE the resposnibility of someone and got dumped for what ever reason.

WHY would someone put more puppies out there?

Just because their dogs are good pets??????GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!

Take a walk into a shelter and adopt a dog that is on death row for no reason except no one wanted it, instead of condoning your uncles's breedings!

So you have a good dog, congratulations. If you wanted a mutt, there could have been a puppy saved if you had chosen to adopt instead of choosing to contribute to overpopulation.

I have been involved in animal rescue for many years and people like your uncle (and you) piss ME off.

People who choose to buy a pure bred dog usually do so because of specific traits in that breed, such as the working dogs that are owned by many on this board. AND, even they should not breed unless they REALLY know what they are doing and if it for the betterment of the breed of choice. Your statement that mutts SHOULD be bred to develop new breeds is a load of S*&!. It reeks of self justification.

The biggest problem with this is not that mixed breeds were created, but that they were created intentionally and worse yet, repeatedly! There are enough mixed breeds created accidentally when dogs are misbred, they certainly do not need to be mixed on purpose.

Condeming the intentional crossing of two (or more) breeds is not condeming the people who own them but the people who breed them. There is nothing wrong with owning a mixed breed dog, just have him/her spayed or neutered and do not contribute to the overpopulation problem that we can't afford to just pretend is not there! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> This is just not fair to the dogs that we create and destroy in shelters (pure and mixed alike).

Healthy dogs should be bred for a purpose other than to just create puppies for the sake of creating puppies and every breeder should know what goals (s)he is breeding toward. Doing otherwise should be considered cruelty as many of these animals are killed every day in "shelters" because there is nowhere for them to go.

Take the dog everywhere with you before it's too late and you have a dangerous dog on your hands.

Oh my, I would not get an alpha male and I would not get a puppy under 8 weeks. I have a siberian who is an alpha it is not fun dealing with his stubborness, he is still a sweet heart but stubborn. I also adopted him at 7 weeeks, but was told he was 8, a little miscalculation on their part they had two litters within two weeks of eachother, he got very very sick and I had to take him back to the breeder for a few weeks. he got better and he got more mothering from the mom dog and I am so happy for it. Wait till at least 8, or even 9-10 weeks I would say, two weeks is not much different, they grow up so fast you will never notice. dont' get an alpha unless you know what you are doing.
