Nothing was really wrong with either breed (well, maybe the overfriendliness in labs and destroyed hunting instinct in poodles, but whatever) but the combination is fantastic. Labs are known to be great service dogs but also shed a lot and are definitely not allergy-free. Poodles don't shed and are usually okay for allergy sufferers, but aren't generally good service dogs (I mean that as in not many are used for that purpose. A few poodles have been proven great at darn near everything). When you put them together with good thought and research, the end result is what the dedicated doodle breeders are going for. And this is how breeds get started. The tax collector created the Doberman because he needed a dog to protect him on his collecting. Not that I'm condoning the current fad practice of combining everything with a poodle to create yorki-poos, cockapoos, peke-a-poos, schnoodles, cock-a-doodles, etc. I don't see them actually trying to develop them into a breed like some of these labradoodle people are. If they're in the multigenerational stage and they are having great success, well, more power to them. Even MORE power if some of these doodles retain hunting instinct and some breeders try to develop that. That would indeed be interesting. Also, it's nice to have an alternative to the standard poodle in the hypoallergenic department.
I wish they had thought of a better name, though. "Labradoodle" just sounds like a joke Even "poodledor" is better!
Looks like it's here to stay. In the meantime, breeds currently in existence face uncertain futures, mostly those little-known working breeds in other countries. It's part of the cycle; breeds get developed and breeds die off. At least the 'doodle is a cute one with at least SOME purpose (unlike those peke-a-poos and schnoodles.. there are plenty of small, hypoallergenic breeds already, we don't need more.)
There's also a breed in development called the "Carlin Pinscher" that's a combo between a min-pin and a black pug. Purpose? To extend the muzzle of the painfully brachycephalic pug and make it leggier, more athletic. Cute as heck, and makes perfect sense. Those brachycephalic breeds have issues!

No I am not saying they are not good dogs and I guess new breeds have to start somewhere I do know from a service dog aspect that there are a few being worked in that feild. So far so good. No allergic reactions and they seem to have the smarts and tempermant to do the job. I always tease some of my freinds and tell them I should start raising "Siberdoodles" sled dogs that dont shed It could happen

Sorry, but I just can't make myself have any respect for a breed that ends in oodle.

Lauren, I agree with you on that name. They lose respect points with me on that. But a name is a name, they didn't choose to be called that, and so far the good ones are anything but doodles.
Still, when the breeder has a tagline of "Come doodle around with us," it's kind of.. uh... yeeeeah
Waaay better than a Sibeydoodle husky or a German sheppoodle Can you imagine if they tried to poodle-ize these breeds? Just the thought of a shepherd in a continental clip makes me either want to laugh hysterically or cry, knowing that there has to be someone out there getting ready to try and pull off just that

So maybe if I cross my German shepherds with a poodle...
Oh my gosh! BAD mental image!!!! ***smacking forehead on desk to rid mind of terrible picture of long nosed, curly, poofy haired sable beast***
My allergies aren't that bad! That's about enough to give a person nightmares!

Hmm.... sheperdoodle... yes, it'd look pretty silly. Unless they gave it dreadlocks. I've seen a poodle in a corded coat. It's surprisingly awesome.
Yes, German sheppie in dreads.
/wonders what exactly went into this mexican lasagna she just ate.

It's just one of those crazy mixes that should not exist. Like great danes and chihuahuas. Wrong wrong wrong!
