Maybe I should get some of this bitter apple! My wife bites her nails also. I bet this bitter apple is cheaper than having her get her nails done. She "claims" that if she gets her nails done, she won't bite them. I think bitter apple will solve the problem! Although I am afraid if I put it on her fingers she might put her finger down my throat or shake the scruff of my neck! LOL
Imagine how B.S. I was when I first heard about it in the early 80's and sprayed it in my mouth to see if it would work. I was a believer after that!
Of course, upon arrival I opened up my bitter apple when it came from Leerburg and put a bunch on my hand, then licked it off. It really didn't seem that bad to me. The pup didn't care for it too much though...
We got our working line gsd at 8 weeks and he was a real biter , had his teeth on everything that moved. We did the 'gag' thing and it worked great. I just filled the pup's mouth with my hand EVERY time. It didn't take him very long to figure out that having that much skin in his mouth was uncomfortable. Also having a toy close at hand to immediately replace it with is important. They need to learn there are things they are allowed to have in their mouth and things they are not allowed. We also did the 'squeeze the gowels around the teeth' to make him release. He soon found out how sharp his own teeth were. These corrections did nothing to squelsh his prey drive!!!
We also used the bitter apple and sprayed it on everything that I didn't want him chewing. It worked great!!!! As he got older I was able to continue using it in diluted concentrations ... just a hint of that smell was enough to convince him to stay with the toys/bones he was allowed to have. It saved our furniture and the house we were renting!!! Highly recomend it.
At this age? Redirect the drive/behavior if this is a working dog...If a pet...then correct.
Just my .02
PS...All my pups from the last litter at 6 wks LOVED bitter apple. Snarled, showed their teeth, grimaced, pawed, and kept on licking and biting the sprayed object--In fact they became more determined than ever--tried another similar substance...same results! lol
Well so much for considering bitter apple since my 14week old Fontaine D'Or pup ate her way out of her kennel run
Yeah, you guys are probably thinking man that is awesome for a pup, it shows her determination and rough mouth, but this sucks, because now I'm on the clock as to how am I going to contain her when she gets bigger. If worst comes to worst, I'm thinking mayby hotwire on her kennel run, but I'm not so sure that is a good idea, somethings about it I don't like (about putting it on a kennel run). Whats the heaviest size fencing they make (chainlink)?
angela thanks for the info. I have had many dogs, but I guess I have been lucky until now, never had any trying to chewing out. Therefore I never put much thought into it. Thanks a bunch!!
I also have the Options Plus Platinum kennels. They are pretty much indestructable. I have 2 of the 10x10x6 size & am relocating them in the yard & making one BIG configuration with them. They also offer tops if needed if you have dogs that may climb or try to jumpout. They also have the sun shade cover which I have. It is a nice kennel product in terms of containment for a dog that is a chewer.
