When I got my dog from my friend who found her as a stray she was ALWAYS itching and scratching and had sores/scabs under her armpits...he was feeding here some "Professional" branded dog food from a local pet store. I switched her to Canidae after reading about it and her coat has gotten much more white and she doesn't itch at all anymore.
Okay, I've found several back threads talking about natural feeding, and I just want a little clarification. I've always heard that animals should NEVER be given chicken or turkey boney because they'll splinter and choke the animal. Am I right to think that this is just for cooked bones? Raw bones are safe and healthy?
Even the raw bones can splinter. I gave my dog beef rib bones thinking the same thing "raw bones should be okay" and found large shards in his feces. I was surprised he was able to pass these sharp pieces without intestinal problems. That was the last time he got any bone that was smaller than beef shanks. And yes cooked bones are even worse -- cooking makes them brittle.
That maybe so, but the pieces I found 'in the back yard' when I was cleaning up were dangerously sharp. Enough so that I never gave him those kinds of bones again.
My puppy also had the "pudding poop" until I started feeding the raw diet. And when she firt started, she too passed pieces of bones but now after several weeks on raw she's finally got firm poop and no splinters. It takes a while for them to learn they actually have to chew their food well.
I like some of the Purina products but their dog Chow is nothing but corn and filler IMO. a 25lb sack of Dog Chow means a 25lb pile of crap in the yard. It's never to late to change to a better food. If your changing to another food, do it over a time period of a week or so. That way there isn't any shock to the system.
Well, this morning he got antelope chops mixed with raw egg (shell included). He thought he'd gone to dog Heaven. Are there any veggies I should avoid, other than onions?
