The Springer is a nice attachment but I also use a leash as I can't trust my dog not to break free if some little dog in the neighborhood gets agressive while we are going down "his" road. Been There Done That.. My dogs are on the springer without the leash during the AD. In neighborhoods - NO. The bike trails -NO.. too much prey out there.. rabbits/ fish jumping in the water/ Better safe than sorry. I've learned my lesson.
I taught my last dog to heel next to the bike. I walked on one side of the bike while having him heel on the other side for a block or two. Once he understood what I wanted he did well. For safety purposes I liked using a Flexi leash. If he did try to go after something he didn't immediately pull the bike over and I had a couple seconds to react so I could control both the dog and the bike.
Your way of teaching a dog to adapt to the springer is a must or they will snap the little plastics. Before the leash when my dog was just on the springer and that little dog came rushing out at us and my dog broke away from me. The best defense for me and that little dog was the word "platz"... Ain't it fun???
Not to dig up an old post like this - but for anyone considering a springer - if your bike has a shifter wire running down the back of the frame, the springer won't fit on your bike - I ordered one, decided I didn't need it before it arrived because my dog was doing fine heeling next to the bike even passing other dogs/squirrels/rabbits with a leash, tried to install it anyway just because I had it - doesn't fit right, shipping it back on Monday.
