Contact the Secret Service. I know this sounds odd, but they are the ones that we were directed to contact about scammers. Might not be able to get your money back, but you might be able to help put a hurting on those that do this.

Chris - you need to go to your bank and threaten to sue them. You should not have to stand the loss here. They have insuyrance for things like this. If you scream loud enough I will guarantee myou they will stand the loss. Threaten to start to write letters to the editor of your local news paper - BANKS hate that kind of advertising. Take them to small claims court. File a police report with your local law enforcement.
Dont take this laying down.

It sounds like you pick up a trojan. It lays back until you use pay/pal then activates. I hope some members learn from your experience. It could have been installed a couple ways through email or through the web file sharing or hidden script code. I'm not a computer expert but, Everyone on broadband should have a router, anti-virus and software firewall. Security update windows and firewall reguarly. Scan every email for viruses keep anti-virus updated.
Ed had some great advice. I hope they get caught and have a very large friskey cellmate.

This might be a good reason to partition your money into seperate accounts as well. Even though I'm fairly confident that if I fall victim to something like this that it will be resolved eventually, I still only keep a few hundred dollars over my monthly expected expenses in the account that I use for online transactions.

I forget which bank my dad banks with - but he has this neat lil thing where if he buys stuff online, the bank generates a NEW credit card number on-the-fly for him, he sets the limit for that card and an expiration date, this way if you are placing an order somewhere for $150, you type in $150 into the software, give it a 30 day expiration date, and it spits out a brand spanking new visa card number - if the number ever gets stolen, its useless to anyone that steals it.
I know this doesn't really help in paypal instances unless you change your paypal credit card info on a daily basis, but I wish more banks had this type of service.
Banks have liability policies that come automatic with most accounts, usually something like "you are liable for the first $100 off loss, everything over $100 that got stolen will be covered by bank insurance". I have no doubt that you will get your money back somehow.

I was once the victim of a check cashing scam, unbenownst to me until bounced checks I'd never seen started to come back to me...anyway...as Ed says, it is a fraud issue, and in my case the banks immediately corrected the account balances back to the original amounts. It was also investigated by the feds and local police.
I would feel confident in saying that the feds would be interested and I hope the banks will make haste in rectifying the horrible situation!!

What Ed said, Chris. Your bank needs to make this right, just as if someone stole your bank card. They'll tell you they can't do anything just to get you to go away. Don't talk to one of the tellers, talk to the branch manager IN PERSON.
Be an Azz if you have to be (not much of a stretch for you, right? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ) I know this sux right now, but be persistent, and you will prevail.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
Happy and SAFE Training,
Scott |
