I'm about to purchase a puppy from one of the Sch club members and the whole litter(almost 8 weeks old) look like little clones of each other. I went thru some puppy testing that Ed recommended and I can't differentiat between any one of them except the furry alligator he slipped in there When they were let out they all ran out to explore except one. He ran out, bite my pant leg and started to hump my shoe. they all chased the burlap bag and bit and tugged. We popped a whip to see if one would cringe, none did they all ran to investigate. One of the club members did some toe pinching and they all came back to play, some yelped but weren't bothered and came back to play. I'm want the pup for SchutzHund but I don't think the furry 'gator would be the best choice for someone to start to learn on. Any suggestions or links would be most helpful.
Thanks Cindy, the place was new for them, we did put them all back and tested individually but I think I'll try it again next week. I saw one I liked, nothing you can explain and my 4 yr old son picked out the same one or it picked him when I wasn't looking. Not very scientific but I think almost any one of them would be good.
Another point to mention, too much "testing" becomes training for puppies. I don't allow people to test my puppies, I observe them every day from birth and then record those observations. I may stress them in a new location at different points in their development and see what happens but after they have seen something once, it is familiar and the reaction doesn't mean as much to me...
Here at Leerburg, the major test for pups comes on the day they are tattooed. It's a stressful day and invoves some unavoidable pain for them, seeing how they handle certain stimuli in that setting can tell you volumes about a pup's innate character, drive and temperament.
If you like what you saw out of the pup, and it has the qualities you like... go for it!
And as an owner of a dog that Cindy tested for me personally, I can say first hand that she selected the right dog for me that fit my personality and training style..( except for that first eight months of the excitement whizzing... )
