The limited registration can be useful for breeders who would like their dogs to be proven for breeding (titled in some capacity, adult hip rating, health/temperament/nerve etc checked or tested in some way) before breeding them. The limited registration is the only way a breeder can decide which of their puppies will be bred and which will not. It is not a "done deal" for breeding - the breeder can also very easily change the registration to full, allowing breeding - only takes one signature on a one-sheet application sent to AKC. Very easy to change the registration to full when the dog is old enough for anyone to know he is breeding quality.

PS: The dog I'm working now, turned out to be one of the best in the litter if not the best, and the breeder allowed me to have first pick and he was suggesting highly against him, Well I won Now he is wants to breed to him next spring. Now imagine if I had limited registration
The breeder of a dog can have Limited Registration reversed at a later date if that worthless ugly duckling turns out to be something great. I've known several breeders who have done this when a pup turns out to have far surpassed expectations.

Molly - but you'd take the time to spell that out to a buyer, knowing you.
Whole different ballgame then!

It's two sides of the same coin. If you buy a pink-papered puppy for the working potential and pedigree, would you really want just any other buyer to be able to start a backyard business using the same lines? I see limited registration, with provision for full reg. with title and hip rating, as a very positive thing for the buyer, the breeder and the breed.

If they are backyard people, and your a reputable breeder, why would you even sell to someone like that??? I wouldn't.
If you tell me this is a working pup or has working potential and you are willing to sell to me, I want my full papers period (to many good breeders offer this to settle). If the breeder says it's pet quality, and I think he is wrong, I will try to convence him otherwise, but if he refuses, then move on the the next place, But if there is something wrong with the pup, and I as a breeder don't want anything to do with the pup, I would declare that pup dead with AKC and sell the dog as is, with an aggrement to get the dog spayed or neutered, by about 8 months old.
As for the getting papers reversed later, I would not want to have to count on someone to reverse my papers later on on my working pup, to much can go wrong in between to play that game.

<<Molly - but you'd take the time to spell that out to a buyer, knowing you.

That's right Will - I am completely up-front and make everything very clear to the puppy buyer, before even a deposit is put on a pup. If they have a big problem with the limited registration, then I know they do intend to breed the dog without some proof of breedworthiness - in which case nope I don't want to sell them a puppy anyway. If they put some work into the dog and the dog proves to be sound mentally and physically as an adult, then I am just as excited as the owner to be able to pass those genes on to another generation. So I have no problem with my puppies being bred, but I do have a problem with them being bred without proving they should be. And, to those who argue - it is impossible to tell at 8 weeks if that puppy is breeding quality, no matter how well-bred they are or what qualifications their parents have. Sometimes they surprise you "in both directions" - the greatest puppy in the litter could turn out to be dysplastic or a dud in temperament - the weaker puppy could be the star. Personally I put way too much time in my own breeding program (developing the bloodlines, titling the dogs, proving their temperament and drives and nerve) to turn around and sell a puppy who can be bred with the same bloodlines, unproven and using my dogs for "the sell". Nope, won't happen. Hi John!!! How is your Zuni puppy doing?

Molly,
not sure if that was for me or not, first let me say I wasn't attempting to sharp shoot you, it's obvious you have your reasons, and your reasons are quite viable if I may say, but I guess that goes with do you know who you are selling to.
If you have read any of my previous Breeding posts, I am right there with you on the above comment you made that I quoted. I belive the dogs in question should be proven before consideration, Females as well as males, but thats a whole nuther argument, LOL! I guess the people I have delt with knew I intend to work the dogs. I do know that there are breeders out there, that try to keep "paper possesion" of the dog by way of this limited reg stuff because they are high on their horse and think they have the only good dogs in town.

I guess I look at this a little differently because I have no intention of ever breeding therefore a limited registration wouldn't mean much to me. My current dog is AKC registered (big whoop) and could have been bred - but I leave that up the professionals!
So, I understand why a person who takes breeding seriously might do the limited registration until the dog is proven. Even a breeder with the very best intentions could sell a dog with full registration and who knows what the owner would do with that dog...it's just part of the 'ballgame'. Of course, I'm not saying one way is better than another, to me it is just a preference thing.
I guess you might feel differently if you were planning on doing Schutzhund or something. I can't speak from that angle as I am hoping to do competitive obedience with my next dog.

Molly
Molly,
She's a handful of puppy in the most positive sense. She's been to training twice and all indications are that she has the tools. The question is, can I acquire skills fast enough to bring out the potential. We're working on basic obedience (all positive) and tracking and we're really having fun. Wonderful puppy.

Hi Guys,
1. My pup for what I can say is not worthless. From watching lot of videos, I know my pup is of working bloodline. I want to train him for Shutland sport. Just for his fun and if he proves to be really good then mebe go for competition. So no neuter. So at this point I feel helpless. How much I should have paid?
2. It is not that I don't want to register on AKC but wanted to know if that an option or a complusion.
3. In terms of accidents, it was just a hypothesis. By the way my almost 4 months old puppy have started to hump...and your 18 months have not done so. What do you do? No I am serious. I guess I need to take him for longer walks so that he gets tired by the time he gets home... Any suggestions on this?
Thanks,
Rashmi
