What if it's too hot to do anything outside all day for more than 5 minutes and too rainy at night for me to wanna go out and stand in the rain being eaten by mosquitos? Am I supposed to crate my dog for 20 hours a day? My dog's only in the crate when I can't supervise him, which is maybe for 4-6 hours 2-5 times a week depending on my week.
As I stated before, you are making this more difficult than it is.
If it is too hot, supervise the dog indoors. If the pup is an active pup, you may want to have the dog on lead.
4-6 hours crated a couple times a week is not the end of the world. Dogs sleep almost as much as cats.
It is better to go out and sweat for 5 minutes playing with your dog several times a day than to have the dog loose and doing nothing all the time in my opinion.
I get up at 5, let the dog out. Go to work. 9 am she is let out by a family member. 1 pm she is let out again by a family member and moved from her XXlarge garage crate into the house crate. She stays there in the AC until I return home at 4pm. Then we play. We hike, we swim (well, ok- I swim- she watches, but I am working on that) and we go do stuff. 9-10pm she is in the crate for the night. While she is in the car, she is crated. So all in all yes, it is a lot of time in a crate.
Dogs that are outside spend a lot of time in their dog houses. Crates serve a similar purpose.
like i said at the time it was unavoidable now i really try to limit the time in the crate and give each dog all the attention they need and time to stretch out
I certainly understand the issues of working and working with one's dog(s). I meant no offense or intended no recrimination. Obviously, you are well tuned in to the needs of your dog, considerate of it, and are a committed to its well-being.
For the most part I agreed with your original post.
