frontline doesn't kill ticks right away as advantix does and in some areas it isn't aµeffective anymore (old product you know)
advantix, in my case anyhow does the trick. The prescribed dose is once a month. I have given my dog, which is a tick magnet, a dose beginning off may and am still looking for a tick to appear.
Warning for collie owners. If there are any other collie owners here do not use Avantage or Heartguard unless your dog has been tested for a missing gene. You have to use Frontline for fleas and Interceptor for heartworm. The others can be fatal for 80% of collies.
Wauneta, don't know the exact stats, but I've heard that as well. I'm going to jump in and say watch that stuff on epileptics, also. There is a lot of data supporting not using these products, especially Heartguard, on epileptics.
Actually, all heartworm preventitives on the market are in the same chemical class - avermectins (and there are a few other drugs in this class as well). The gene in collies and some other breeds that causes the sensitivity is sensitive to avermectins, not just the ivermectin in heartguard. All heartworm preventitives have the potential to cause the same problem if used incorrectly. That said, the toxic dose is well over the the amount used for prevention (I believe it is over 10x the preventitive dose), even for sensitive dogs. If you are very concerned about the sensitivity, the best thing to do is get your dog tested, and then be extra careful with preventitive you choose and other medications your dog may be on. Washington State University does testing. Here is another website with some interesting - but a bit technical - information on the sensitivity gene research. web page
For flea and tick prevention I have used Bio-spot on my border collie for the past 2 years. She hasn't had a flea or tick since I've used it - and she's often in the swamp and woods.
