In regards to the DEA license,I hope that you are not in a hurry. The process can take a considerable amount of time. I didn't count the days but from start to finish it took several months.

After having a license since 1990, our renewal, after being filled out, got lost in our admin section. I really didn't think about it until a few months later, it dawned on me, that we had not recieved the new license. After calling DEA and being told they never recieved the renewal, I tracked the renewal down. Then the nightmare started. DEA would not accept it because the license had expired and I had to redo the entire package, like it was a first time request. What a pain in the posterior. An investigator even had to come out and check our storage facility, which they had never done in the 12 previous years. It took over 6 month to finally get it straigtened out and recieve our license. Even being fee exempt it was still a royal pain.

Derek,
I just use the codes, 9200 (heroin) 7360 (marijuana) 9041 (cocaine) and 1105 (methamphetamine) that covers about every thing you need. Actually, once you get approval for CI drugs, you can pretty much add whatever you need.

Hello Everyone, I was wondering a lot of the same things posted here and you guys are great for knowing so much, I had an additional question though. What type of storage do you guys have to have for the drugs that you are using?......I would really like to be a narcotics dog trainer so all the info that you guys have is really great. Thanks Brandon

We have a large canine section, therefore we keep a pretty large inventory on hand. Our safe is in excess of 750 pounds, has a specified fire rating and penetration time and is alarmed. The amount you have in inventory, which will be stated in your protocol, will dictate the level of security you must have. The DEA will give you the reference that outlines the requirements.

Our "safe" is actually a steel two drawer file cabnet that it bolted to the wall and counter next to it. There are two combination locks and a key needed to open the safe. There are two keys with the combinations attached.... I have one... and the other is sealed in an envelope in a safe in the Unit Supervisor's office to be used only in emergency.
The "safe" is secured in the department's armory which only myself and three other people have an electronic key fob to enter. When you use your fob it loggs who was in there and what time they entered.
I have each 28g. sample broken down into a 14g. and two 7g. packages that are inside canvas drug bags. Each drug is stored in it's own sealed ammo can. I'm VERY particular about handeling the drugs to prevent cross contamination. (just a pet peeve) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for all the info guys very good stuff. And David thanks for the actual numbers on the drugs..the DEA list is so long and I was thinking the purest cleanest substances would be best to use and I was right about the "big 4". I'll be a guinea pig-I just sent my stuff off now and we'll see how long it takes. I have a double lock fireproof safe I was going to use and being a small operater planned on small amounts of drugs on hand so I hope it works out. Here is a real novice question---as the drugs themselves age does the scent get weaker?? Example in 5 years will I need to purchase more product to train with or unless I trip and spill some its good forever??
Thanks-Derek

What would you guys recomend for me to do to train my own dog for narc work? I have a police dept. that would like me to train one but I am not a "pro" so I do not know the routes to go. Maybe I should just leave it for the pros, but there yearly budget is very small.... thanks for any ideas....Brandon

Derek,
I'm able to replace mine annually. I keep a specified amount on hand in the safe. Each of our handlers are issued a certain amount of each drug. The aids issued to the handlers are inventoried monthly. All certifications are done from my inventory, rather than using the aids issued to the handlers. Handlers aids are replaced, annually, anytime one is damaged or any time a handler feels one has been contaminated. Because of the amount of drugs we have access too, I don't have to order mine from DEA.

Brandon,
AS far as training goes, surely there are some police departments in your area that have drug dogs. Perhaps you can train with them. If you are not with a police department, then I don't know. Many departments are hesitant about having other than law enforcement train with them. We have many departments that train with us, as our training is open and free, but only to law enforcement agencies.
