I know there are many "if's" - but what would you guess the average age of a dog that would train out to do narcotics. I realize each is different - depending on the dog --- I'm looking for what everybody believes to be the average OR maybe I ought to ask, How old should a dog be - before you start training him/her seriously on narcotics.
Mark,
Like you said, every dog is different. In my experience I would say between 2-3 yoa. Alot of the puppy is gone and the focus seemed better especially when the searches are extensive....Howard
Strictly narcotics? Yea, a dog with the drive can be started earlier. I still have this dual purpose notion in my head. I guess not everyone wants a dog that bites.
I can't see any disadvantage to starting a dog as young as possible. I introduced scent memo work to my present dog at 3 months old. Not only did he certify on 4 substances at 9 months of age, but he performed better than most of the mature dogs in his class!!
I don't believe that maturity will bring out any prey/retrieve drive that is absent in the puppy. If the puppy doesn't have it after being developed properly, he/she won't have it as a mature dog.
You mentioned "serious training". I don't think that you should ever go beyond the dog's level. If the dog is in Kindergarten, don't train at the college level. Stick with Dr. Seuss until the puppy lets you know he/she is ready to advance.
Opportunity always looks better going than coming.
