Hopefully Mackie will come back tonight... different time zone there folks. In reading some of the older posts, she mentions the pup having GREAT prey drive... not once here did she say that the dog didn't. What she did say is that the dog didn't pass the protection evaluation. At the age the dog is at currently, I would like to know what they WERE evaluating if they weren't looking at the prey drive which Mackie has been working with since the beginning.
So far as "titled" females not producing as well as dogs with titles, did they mean SHOW titles, or working? If you do not train your Bea, how are you to know what she has to pass on? I don't understand their thinking. If I couldn't train her, and breed her, then I wouldn't breed her at all.
So far as Obedience goes, yes you can start now. Use positive motivation and use her prey drive to your advantage.
M_Oliver... I don't close posts simply because I don't agree... That isn't my job. People in other countries such as the Phillipines have a harder time finding people who actually know what they are talking about. It is not a wealthy country. If we do not guide Mackie who will?
Thank you Deanna for taking the cudgels for me. I cannot believe the attitude of M_Oliver regarding people asking questions on this forum.
I can accept that there are as many ways to train a dog as there are trainers. And there are moron trainers and moron breeders. But definitely there are no moron owners as we only want the best for our dogs.
I have tried to educate myself on this activity. I have bought several videos from Ed on the topics that I want to be informed. And also equipment. And also books. But I feel that these are not enough. The hands on experience of other people who share this same activity with me is definitely priceless. And aside from my club I believe that this forum provides me with the venue to further educate myself in the handling of my dog.
I would like to tell all of you that this forum is very informative and your posts are very much appreciated especially from someone who does not have the luxury of what you have in your country.
Deanna,
Where are the post that you mention Mackie stating the dog has great prey drive? I just don't understand why this reputable trainer would fail a 9 month old dog with great prey drive. Could there be other reason's? Hopefully Mackie can get more specific reason's from this trainer and let us all know.
Its not that a protection trained female wont produce as well just because she is protection trained, she wont produce as well because she doesnt have the genes. She still wouldnt produce even if she wasnt trained. Same with a dog who will produce well. Their training has nothing to do with what they pass on to their offspring.
