The instant my pup does something forbidden (i.e. lunge at a cat) I say "No!" and he gets an instant scruff shake. I reserve this type of correction for anything I absolutely will not tolerate (and is potentially harmful). This hasn't actually stopped him from wanting to chase cats but now I can just click my tongue and he'll stop (if he ignores it he gets another correction, but he neve does).
Oh, and I always reward the pup for 'obeying' me, i.e. coming to me when I tell him not to chase the cat. That way he realizes that the best fun in the world comes from complying with my rules.

Thanks Kristine, that is what I was thinking about doing but wanted to be sure. She responds well to being scruffed as I have had to do it for something else.
I really appreciate the input.
