Speaking of Tripe, I found tripe that was white at my local grocer yesterday, and was wondering if it's any good. It was cheap, so I bought some, but haven't fed it yet. I'm thinking that maybe it's the cleaned version, therefore not as nutritious...any thoughts? Also, what's the deal with pork? Some say no way, some say they feed it all the time. Help, please. I'm trying to get a better variety going for my pooches, but obviously don't want to get them sick. Right now, I make my own raw diet in batches, similar to the frozen raws you can buy, but way less expensive.
White tripe is indeed prepared for human consumption. In other words, it's been cleaned and bleached and pretty much sterilized to the nutritional quality of iceberg lettuce. Find unbleached, uncleaned, straight-from-the-carcass green tripe for your dog. If you decide to make use of the tripe for a human meal, be forewarned.. it's one of the stinkiest foods to cook. My dad used to cook it now and then and every time we had to send him to the garage with a Coleman stove because of the smell!
Thanks Diana! I knew someone would know. That's pretty much what I figured; how could something that color be unrefined??? Funny, in my head I was thinking it was probably a waste and compared it to iceberg lettuce myself-not harmful, but no real value either. What about the pork though? I have a negative perception of it, but I don't know exactly where I got it or why. Does anyone feed pork, pig's feet, etc.? Sorry if I missed this somewhere else.
I have used Green Tripe (www.greentripe.com) from the time my GSD was a puppy, and he loves it. His food drive for the green tripe is over the top. When I use dry kibble, I like California Natural and i'm trying Royal Canin "German Shepherd 24" at this time. From the research that I have done and taking recommendation from other handlers, these brands are first rate, but they are pricey. In the end, I still perfer the green tripe.
