I'll probably get myself in trouble here, but I think ownership of powerful dogs should be restricted, an age limit, backround check, an agreement to train at a minimum. I hate that Pit Bulls get into the hands of the wrong people but they do. But even if they don't responsible owners are surrounded by people that feel the "rules don't apply to me", can't count the number of off leash dogs that run up on me when I have my pit and to be honest it scares the hell out of me. Then there are the folks that let their dogs "play", one Ts off on another and the people do incredibly intelligent things like stick their hands in between the snapping dogs, the best I have seen is a guy falls on the ground with his sheppard in a head lock, while the other dog is at his dogs feet (and yes his dog bit the hell out of him, in the face).......what about these people? The poor dogs don't stand a chance, gosh sorry for the doom and gloom so early but it makes me want to move where there are NO people, discouraging.

There are idiots of all ages. Don`t automatically assume that older is better. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> I`ve been handling our Boxer and Lab since I was 13(I`m 16 now) and I`m a lot better about training them than most adults are. What good would a background check be when most people involved in maulings are just non criminal idiots? Sorry, but I just get tired of age being associated with stupidity so much. Enforcing laws that are already there like leash laws would do more than adding more restrictions. My city requires that all leashes be 6ft long or less and of substancial strength to hold the dog but even Animal Control doesn`t know that. Technically that makes Flexis and those shoestring "fashion" leashes illegal but it`s never enforced. Enforcing it would make a lot of folks keep better control over their dogs.
I don't assume older is automatically better, but older IMO provides more life experiences to the "what could happens" that children hopefully have not had the pleasure of experiencing. I believe it increases the possibility of a more comprehensive responsibility as one has "lived" more, thats all.
