Well folks unless something unexpected happens looks like the Working Dog Program will be getting the green light. It was approved at this months AKC board meeting pending some regulation rule changes. Final vote should come next month for the program to start 01/01/2007. The following parent breed clubs, American Bouvier des Flandres Club, American Rottweiler Club, Doberman Pincher Club of America and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America will be allowed to put on up to 5 events per year.
o.k. so this will make me sound like a blooming idiot but....
do you think that any AKC dog can/will get this title.
Or will this be working dog lines only. I don,t see an AKC GSD doing bite work. Is the fear that good lines will end up getting watered down and bad line being sold as "top line dogs"?. what type of trials will there be. how are the routine going to be run. is it going to be like Schutzhund,Ring Sports and Street Sports

to worry is to pay interest on a debt you dont even own
I think this is a good thing for working dogs, for dogsport in the US, and for dog training as a whole.
ANY added exposure that dogsport can get in the US is a good thing, even if it's from the AKC.
For good or bad the AKC is the organization that most of the US looks to for dog information, breeding, training, etc. For them to legitimize some form of working dogsport in their eyes and in the eyes of their following (i.e. the American public)is a very good thing. It's a good thing for bite training with the current political climate for BSL and aggressive dog legislation, it's a good thing to expose a larger group of people to what working dog training is and looks like, it's a good thing to have the AKC moving in the right direction.
People will probably flock to the AKC's version of dogsport, and then hopefully they will see the light and move on to more serious training venues. Positive exposure for our dogs and dogsport is a VERY GOOD THING FOR AMERICANS!!
If people with working lines enter and dominate then show line people who are also interested in working will breed with better dogs and those interested in competing will be forced to use stronger dogs as competitors. In a vacuum at least. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
