It just depends some people are breed fanciers, but to me a good working is a good dog. The bad guys dont care about pedigrees and the bite feels the same. I checked into getting a dobe pup from working lines flown in from poland 2200$. I drove 2 hrs a got a good working mal pup for 300$ Does the same job, not as many health problems. It is sooo much easier to find a reasonably priced working mal than it is a rottie or dobe . Guess some people are flush with cash must be nice
Well I see Peyton, opps I mean Hayley found her way on to this board.
Tell us please Hayley exactly what titles you've obtained and what the lines are on your Rotties and RS's including any you may have now. When was the last time you "caught" any breed? Reason I ask you want folks to think a GSD is easy out of the box.

It is certainly a nice thought to be able to pay less than half for a GSD or Mal, especially when you consider the washout process being somewhat harsh. 3 or 4 or 5 dobies to get a good one might just make my wife have a heart attack at $2000 per mistake. That is worth thinking about. I just might always be a Dober-man though
I have had all 3 breeds, and like them all. My favorite is the Dobermann, but the lines that I like have pretty much died out. I haven't ever seen an American bloodline Doberman that I would feed, so I am referring to European lines when I talk about Dobermans. My female from years gone by was the best working dog I have ever owned, as well as being the perfect house dog, great protection dog and super friend and companion. ALL dogs are compared to her in my eyes, and not ONE has even come close to her abilities. I trained her from a 7 week old puppy, she was a German import.
I now have GSDs and Mals. I like the Mals more personally, although they can be exhausting sometimes. They never stop thinking! They are not for everyone, I think they are an aquired taste.
I don't think a Malinois is a good choice for a dog "beginner"- they can go 0-60 in about .2 seconds. German Shepherds were bred to be able to do a lot of things well, so they are (generally) a little more easy to handle. Mals and Dobes are like sports cars, they like to go fast! If you can harness their minds and bodies, it's hard to beat. GSDs are more like SUV's, they can go anywhere and do everything well but typically with a bit less flash and speed.
I think asking people which breed is better is kind of like asking people what brand of car is best or what kind of peanut butter to buy... it's a matter of opinion!
To even put Mals and Dobes in the same sentence may be a criminal offense in 48 states. I'll have to do some checking. Comparing the two as sport cars is like comparing a Ferrari (Mal) with an MG midget (Dobe).

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
I have a question to all the trainers on the board regarding Hayley's post about GSD's being obsessive. If a dog is allowed to become obsessive about something, chasing its tail, sticks, balls et cetera, doesn't that indicate boredom? In other words, the dog may need something to do to occupy its mind and body?
Anyway, I am not expert but everything I have read about different breeds one thing that GSD's seem to have over other breeds is they are able to do MANY different things. I am a GSD fan. I do, however, have a soft spot for dobies and heard it is extremely difficult to find a good one.
