Thanks for that link! I was trying to find that for another thread and I couldn't remember the dog's name. When someone placed a new toy in with his old toys and asked for the foreign toy...it figured it out. Even more impressive was it retained the name of that toy when tested later.

The only thing you need to watch out for is teaching tricks that will negatively affect bitework...
I was wondering about that. In a strictly obedience dog, I wouldn't imagine it would hurt much since one "trick" is pretty much all the same to them. But I was wondering if it would have a potential negative effect in Schutzhund or PP dogs, when you really can't have them trying to "hug" the helper!

My dog at the club will sometimes do an unauthorized trick during a Bh routine. eg for the sitz in motion every now and then I get the cute begging dog sit, or a roll over during a down stay or a paw wave on occasion.
That must be hilarious. Frustrating, maybe, but I bet you get a good laugh from the observers!
"These findings from a new study suggest that some basics of language and learning may be innate to dogs and other animals, and may have evolved independent of humans."
I think that's basically what Temple Grandin says in her book "Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior". A really, really interesting book that's only gotten a few mentions on this board. Some unique perspectives on what makes animals tick.
