I think vets who push extra vaccines for BS reasons need to be sued for malpractice; after all, it's all about money, so why not try to make them understand in a way that means something to them? Do they forget the Hippocratic oath????
Ed,
No offense taken. Actually I just got done watching that immunizations link that cindy posted, and it has me asking myself questions about a few items. Such as why 3 out of 6 children of mine that have NO family history of asthma end up struggling with it throughout early childhood. Now, naturally I will be reading up much more on the background of this type of discussion.
If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn't thinking.
Ohio state law does not require rabies vaccination unless they have bitten someone and no proof of rabies vaccination is available. Counties may require rabies vaccination as part of their licensing requirments. However, an unvaccintated dog that bites is subject to a strict quarantine. I've seen references to a minimum of six months, be immediately destroyed, or a ten day quarentine.
There is a group called the Rabies Challenge Fund that is seeking to fund tests that will expand the vaccination interval for rabies from 3 years to 7. http://www.rabieschallengefund.org
Charlie - fact is the there may be a law but that does not mean you have to vaccinate. It does not become an issue unless the dog bites someone. Then it only needs to be quarantined for 10 days.
I've heard of dogs needing to be quarantined even if they have been vaccinated and you have proof. It all depends on the law in your county.
In researching MI laws reguarding licensing and rabies vaccination, I found they were enacted in 1919! I'd say it's time for those laws to be re-evaluated...
Hi..I have 4 Rat terrier puppies just turning 6wks. I want to do what is right for them and all the vets around here give the 7way vaccine at 8,12 and 16wks. Then they reccomend yearly vaccinations. The vet I have been using says they are not covered unless I do this. I'm just not sure what to do..I usually give my own shots as I have a bunch of rescues and I have started giving every 2yrs after reading. As far as I know I have had no problems from vaccines. To me giving vaccines at 6wks is just wasting it , they are not old enough to develop immunity. I would reccomend the parvo and distemper at 12wks
