IMO, sit is sit and down is down till you are freed from the exercise…. No need for the stay.
Alex… it’s easy to teach your dog to ignore other people’s commands. Something to think about starting once your dog understands what you are expecting from her.
Forgot to add. If you use sit means sit until released in the house don't forget to release before you leave the room. It's easy to forget when you get distracted. I have done that a couple of times and felt bad when I got back and found my dog still sitting in the kitchen.
Bob
I'm sure you felt bad, but c'mon, admit it....you were a little proud, too, right?
Alex, I tell my friends not to give my dog any commands, too, but I temper it by telling them that he's in training and other people giving commands will confuse him. Otherwise it sounds kind of harsh.
If it's strangers that do it, well, I'm already irritated at them for approaching my dog and trying to order him around that I don't care what they think. Of course, Carbon doesn't listen to others, and one guy said to me, "Wow, he's not trained very well yet, huh?" To which I replied, "He's great on the attack command...you want to see it?" Just tell people your dog isn't allowed to talk to strangers!
OK Amber. You got me. I was proud of my boy. Just felt stupid.
Commands from others is another reason I wish I would have taught formal commands in German and left informal for english. At the time I thought if I used German and a situation came up that I had to immediately yell a command I would screw up and say it in English. But looking back on it I wish I would have done it.
Another thing on the list of wish I would have done.
I only use a stay command around the house when I go outside n don't want my dog to follow me out the front door, I'll tell em to stay n slam the door in their face They wander around the house n don't stay in any particular position... I just use sit and down commands as a stay command.
Robert, I think that is a great idea, no wonder I kept seeing "platz, sitz" etc...on here. DUH. I figured it was German commands, but wasn't too sure. I think I am going to do that.
Amber, everytime I have told someone to not give my dog a command, I look like the BIGGEST JERK. It pisses me off when someone comes in and yells sit at my dog 5 or 6 times. Then I tell them, don't say sit so many times, youre going to screw her up. When they say, she's not trained very well, I say "she only listens to people she respects" haha. I guess most people who don't understand dog training will never understand not to give strange dogs commands and I will always look like a jerk to them.
Matthew, how can I teach her to ignore other people?
