bear in mind that it isn't just salmon from the pnw, but salmonids. that is, any fish that spawns in fresh water. so that includes trout and steelhead as well as salmon.

You guys are so lucky, I've been meat shopping for my switch to raw, and it's not looking pretty.
I emailed some local butchers, and they caught on to the dog thing - they upped the prices! Chicken necks are 1.50/lb! The lowest price I've seen so far was 1.19/lb for a big big pack of chicken wings...but one of my dogs is 90 lbs, and I'm afraid he'd just slurp them up instead of chewing.

I gave them eggs the other day to experiment, Digger chewed them up and ate them like he'd been doing it all his life...I had to crack it for Bella, though.

There's this Asian food market near my boyfriend's, though, and it looks like they might have some pretty cheap stuff - but I'm a little hesitant because they store it in buckets in the aisles! I mean, I wouldn't touch it for myself if I had a ten foot pole - do I really want to give it to my dogs?

				Heather,
How big is your freezer? Ask about case price. I don't pay more than $.50 per pound.

I'm not convinced that feeding whole caracasses is necessary (if I did, I'd probably raise rabbits) for a balanced doggie diet.

Chicken Leg 1/4's - WalMart
Organ meats - WalMart
Ground turkey - ALDI
Eggs - ALDI
Beef fat (for winter) - local grocery store
Canned fish - WalMart
Recreational bones - local butcher

I'm not convinced that whole carcasses are necessary either..... just aiming for a similar meat-to-bone ratio over time.

I went for a long time with mostly backs, adding some muscle meat unless they were particularly meaty, and throwing in whatever was cheap at the meat counter, for variety.

That is awesome! I wish I could find prices like that for a raw diet. That's less than what I'm paying for premium kibble and canned right now. And believe me, I've really done my research to pay as little as I am for that stuff now ($.78/lb).

are there still slaughterhouses around denver? if so, contact the meat processing plants and find out if you can get their scrap meat, heads, spines, etc.
i have gotten lamb off-cuts from local meat processors for as little as .25 cents a lb. it's more hassle than buying at the supermarket, but if you are paying high prices otherwise, then it is worth the trouble.

What about salmon and trout from the Great Lakes, any problems there?

No.... it's specifically raw salmonids from west of the Cascades.
No problem with cooked (or canned, of course).

Yes, I believe there are stil many slaughter houses here. I don't know if I'll have the freezer space for a lot of stuff though. I have a friend who is a butcher and he said he'd give me all the meat shavings for free. Don't know about anything else, but the shavings would occupy the muslce meat group right? I'd just have to pay for the rmb's (necks & backs) and small amount of organ, plus the supplements.
