Forgot to add, when you find a group you want to train with don't take "no" for an answer. Show up on training days anyways, send gifts, and just in general stalk them.
Stalking, if done right, can be very effective.................
I'm not sure why you are having a hard time finding a trainer. Have you gone to Mesa Community College, Mesa on Tuesday from 7 pm to meet a group of schuzhund folks? I advise you not to bring your dog at the first time but you should go and observe.
There is a group of mondio/schutzhund folks here in Tucson. It is a GSD club, they usually meet on Wedensday around 530 at Reid Park in Tucson. If you want a direction to the park in Tucson, pm me. I don't know if you know who are Ben Gordon or JJ Belcher, JJ has a decoy certification.
Thanks Will. I'll keep all you said in mind. Howard Knauf also told me to ask the trainer if I could see a session where they're working a dog the way I want my dog to be worked. That was my first mistake I think, not asking to see this guy work his or someone else's dog. Just when I think my ducks are in a row, hindsight says I missed some ducks. I didn't ask the last trainer if I could watch a session (Lear's sessions were one on one, no other dogs there).
Thanks also to Betty for your input. I have a feeling I'm going to be racking up the mileage on my car.
I appreciate all the input I can get, being as this is my first time wanting one of my dogs to be protection trained. Lear loves the work, so hope it's something I can continue doing for him.
Thanks for the links Lindsay. I had been to the AZ Schutzhund Club website before, but dismissed it because I'm not planning to do Schutzhund with my dog and just wanted him specifically protection trained.
I wouldn't mind starting with a Schutzhund Club if I can be assured that I would know at what point to stop (?) and continue solely with protection training. From my understanding, the foundational work is the same for sport as for protection, then comes a fork in the road. I would like to attend a session.
The guy in Tucson sounds interesting. Is that where you go? Do you know if JJ is currently training protection dogs also? I can't find any reference to it on the site, except that he apprenticed with Ivan Balabanov.
Maybe you want to talk with JJ about that because some questions I really can't answer for you. He has trained protection dogs before, but I think he will want to see your dog first. I believe he listed his phone number on the link for you to contact him.
Yeah I met him about four years ago before he went to Kentucky to work with Ivan B. I believe he left in March 2003 and came back to Tucson in July or Aug. You can ask him for a reference or send Ivan B. an email to confirm it. I don't go there to work with my dog, but I have been there to watch. I don't have the right kind of dog to work with.
