If you are ever unsure of the HD diagnosis, get a second set of xrays done by a different vet. The positioning is very important and somewhat of an art form. Some vets just do it better than others (Auster is certified as excellent and fair by different orgs., the films were taken by two different vets).

The vet that owns the practice I go to is supposed to be renowned for ortho work. I heard that people come from around the country to see him.In 1992 he was the recipient of the American Animal Hospital Association's Northeast Region "Outstanding Practioner Award". His name is Dr. John W. Whitefield. The practice is Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group and the phone # is 845-221-2244.
Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.

Where is your vet located, Jeanette? I'm too lazy to look up the area code
Han, the particular product I use, I get from the Vitamin Shoppe. It was made for people, but I've had more success with this than I've had with some of the products made specifically for dogs. Here is a link to the stuff I'm using now:

There are also a variety of dog products that are similar to this. Here is a link to Drs. Foster & Smith. They sell some things like Cosequin, Glyco-Flex and various other joint care products. Some of these things are cheaper at other places, but Foster & Smith have their own brand of supplements that I hear are pretty good.

Laxity in the hip joint is not uncommon in young german shepherd dogs.. Dr. Whitefield is a great vet... and has put many dogs I personally know on fitness programs which has tightened up hip joints. One I know went from severe laxity to OFA Good.. and one went Excellent.. We also make the trip to see him.. I think you can also send an xray to him and get phone advice.. he is south of Albany NY... Swimming is what I would do with your pup.. and lots of it.. and I would also make sure you feed him some raw meat on a daily basis.. will help build muscle.

What is the MSM in the Glucosamine/Chondrotin? My GSD is on the Glucosamine/chondrotin. I saw it with the MSM at the store but was reluctant to get that instead, until I asked my vet.

I swear by MSM - I have 2 GSDs with broken hips, (one who also has a squashed pelvis), one senior GSD, and one genetic nightmare GSD with EPI, spondylosis, HD, some severe arthritis in spine, tail, hips, suspected DM etc. If I run out, I know it. MSM stands for: Methyl-sulfonyl-methane
This site is a good one to read thru: http://www.msm.com
The good thing is no known side effects, and no contraindications, like glucosamine with diabetics, chondroitin with aspirin and blood thinners etc. I use with all 4, have seen wonderful results, and never a single problem, I know that is anecdotal, but it works great for us.

Thanks, I will get htat next time. My girl also has spondylosis. She was temperment tested for Guide Dogs For the Blind. She did really well on the temperament test and they wanted her as a breeder UNTIL her x rays came back. They rated her hips on a scale of 0-5, 0 being the worst: her L=1, R=2. I was devistated. Had her spayed right away. I was very concerned so I took her to a specialist and he said her hips weren't that bad. Guide Dogs will rate hard because the breeding stock they have is deep and don't want to bring dogs with marginal hips into it. He said that they would probably not cause her problems until later in life. The spondlyosis will probably cause problems. He said it was due to a lot of jumping. She spent 2 1/2 years in a kennel run constantly on her hind legs trying to see and running and jumping at the run door trying to get it unlatched. You can see it when she runs, bunny hops. Do you know if that is what causes spondlyosis?
