I took him to the vet and they did the "swab" test and confirmed the "mix" is with pit bull.
I'm sorry but you need a new vet. Any vet who would even tell a client something like that needs to be confronted for the bull$hitter he is. How can you trust the health of your pup with someone who is flat out lying to you?
It sounds like you have a wonderful mixed breed puppy, I would enjoy him and disregard anything this totally irresponsible so called vet had to say.
Did I mention HOW MAD THIS MAKES ME??? (at the vet)

welcome to the site, your in a great place for info and don't stop here, there is tons of good info out there but also bad (I was led down the wrong path by a bad trainer). The best thing you did was get advice on your dog this young so you can train him properly. This site is loaded with great open minded people who are more then willing to help you. Remember for every bad thing you hear about certain dog breeds there are ten positives. good luck!

That is one cute pooch. I am a groomer and work in a vet clinic and I'll tell you right now that for the most part the breeds we love to deal with are Pit bulls, Dobes, the majority of Rotties, Most German Sheperds are good, some can just be kinda nutty. Most likely to be outright nasty biting little mutts are Maltese and Shih Tzu with the occasional Poodle thrown in. So much for the cute cuddley little dogs. Winger is going to be the dog you guide him into becoming. Nothing more, nothing less

Cindy Easton Rhodes is correct.
Your vet is completely full of SH#T.
I know this because I do DNA testing on my rescue dogs.
First of all there is only ONE company (MMI Genomics, Inc) that can even do DNA breed testing. (And the test has only been around for a year or two). The test costs $65 and takes SIX WEEKS for the results. And as another poster mentioned, they cannot test for "pit bull" as it's NOT on the breed list. Your vet CANNOT do any kind of swab test BY HIMSELF to test what breed your dog is. It is IMPOSSIBLE. Your vet is LYING to you. Never go to that vet again.
Since your dog is only 8 weeks, your vet would have had to have him tested when he was 2 weeks old in order to have the results back (and they give you a nice framable certificate too).

"validated" breed list: http://www.mmigenomics.com/products2abreeds.html
Even if he DID have pit bull in him, which is impossible for you to know, I agree with everyone who says it just doesn't matter.
EDIT: Yikes, the price went up, it's $79.95 now!

Yep, those are the certificates I've seen.... and that was the company.
Nice catch about the fee and the six weeks, Angela.

Yes, it was a good catch, Angela. That wasn't just misrepresentation: That was a flat out lie. Wow. I would go back into that vet's office and make a HUGE stink. What else is he lying about? His diploma?

Thanks for that info. I didn't know...Time for a new vet.
I didn't like him anyway because he tried HARD to dissuade me from feeding a raw diet (which I started from the second he came home and is doing wonderfully). All these bull-crap answers and nothing specific or even related to a daw diet. His best reason not to do it is because "one of my patients brought in a dog with serious intestinal parasites from bad water..."
What?
Anyway, thanks again for the advice.
I've already begun the practice of doing a SIT before going out the door for walks and letting me go out first. He's so eager to learn and so smart. I sure do love 'im.

You probably already know this from all of the reading you've been doing, but don't focus too much on training at only 8 weeks. Bonding and fun should be your main goal right now. Of course, some pups really take to commands from the beginning and that's a good sign of an active mind (the pup's) and good, positive puppy training (yours).
Cheers.

Yeah - time for a new vet! Unfortunately, raw-friendly vets are few and far between. The best I'VE been able to do in my experience with a number of practitioners is just "agree to disagree" with them... once it's on the table we just don't discuss it - I won't try to enlighten them, and they won't wag their fingers at me and give me the lecture about why they don't approve. One day it'll be easier, but until then - I commend you highly for starting raw from the get-go!! You've made a great choice for Winger and it will be reflected in his good health throughout his long life.
Every time you mention that you're a pilot, I am reminded of this clip:
Flying dog
(Mods, I hope this is OK to post...)
I'm not sure if it's very safe, but AMUSING it certainly IS! And if Winger ever flies with you, he needs a seatbelt!!
Cheers,
~Natalya
