Dogs vary in their need for water. Maybe it's not universal, but I feel pretty strongly that water should be available all day. (I do understand about picking it up in the late day when potty-training.)
It's true that raw food has loads of water in it, so maybe I'm overthinking it. (Naturally, the web sources and most of the vet handbooks talk about water for a kibble dog.)
No, I agree with this. Mine all do have access to it all day; it's just no longer in MY part of the house. It's in their runs in the garage when they're alone, and it's in both the outside run and the general yard out back. The little one is the only one w/his own dish in the house, however.
Dogs consume water at very different amounts, from what I have observed, and I would hate to cause health problems rather than deal with a bit of a mess. I do, however, agree that it is possible to get a dog to ask for water and let them out to get it. Caleb asks for food, water, outside, etc. by barking when I name the right thing. BUT; if he's alone, he has a bucket.
