Sounds like a lot of flip flops and waffling from the trainer.
You can't use the e-collar, but then you can?
He's never used an e-collar but he would use an e-collar on a really dominant dog and he has recommended them to other people?
Is he more consistent with the dogs?
Maybe the past conversation wasn't a dream.
Is he just saying what he thinks you want to hear?
I was giving him the benefit of the doubt b/c Rick said it had been 4-5mos since he talked to the guy. It's possible there was a misunderstanding, and it's possible the guy is loopy.
Agree w/Will, but to play devil's advocate, was the trainer thinking you were just being too hard on Bella w/out good reason? If he doesn't know her, it's POSSIBLE (but not probable) that he MAY have been starting small and working his way up, if needed to an ecollar . Just a small possibility, but I have met trainers like that who are ok, but want to first see the dog sans equipment for evaluation.
OTOH, he may just be stodgy and unwilling to grow and change, and you'll run the other way when you watch his class.
Jenni, I think you have hit the nail on the head with regards to the trainer's attitude toward the ecollar. At least this is my impression after visiting with him. I have no problem leaving this class if I do not like the training.
Thank you all for your helpful input. I really think there was a misunderstanding on my part here. I am not too concerned with the trainer not using ecollars very much because he is a basic obedience instructer predominantly, and I don't think most of his clients would ever use these tools, anyway.
Humans should always be pack leaders regardless of the situation. The only equality should be between you and you GF. Your GF friend should also be part of the training if she is going to be handling your dog. At least just for consistency is concerned so the dog gets the same information and handling.
It's great the trainer sounds like he uses many methods. You should also find out if this trainer uses the techniues and methods suited for your dog. Too hard of a training method may cause problems and so would too soft of a program. The equipment and training methods and techniques should be tailored to your dogs needs and temperament.
i know with my trainer, who is fantastic, she has no problem with using an e-collar, but doesn't start with it, and does, like someone said here, like to see the dog without all his "gear" at first.
She also recommends things like gentle leaders at first, quickly fading them out if they aren't working for the dog. This doesn't mean she isn't good.
maybe talk to the trainer again, and this time take notes. I tend to mix up conversations, and it's nice to have those notes on hand when i start to think someone said something they didn't.
then too, this trainer might not be worth your going too, but another phone consult won't hurt anything.
