Tripe - you can pretty much tell what's in there by the way it smells. I still don't know why it's so darn good for dogs, but when I stopped feeding it, Jenni Williams chewed me out , so I started feeding it again.

You definitely don't want to include the word "Menudo" when you're talking about tripe and a raw diet for your dogs. The white tripe you use for Menudo has been bleached. It's green tripe that you want for your dogs. Green tripe is not for humans and there are a ton of posts on other threads about it. I'm positive one of the experts will give you more details.

Hi Carolyn, I asked about tripe awhile back because I thought that maybe it was the stuff you can buy at the store but boy was I wrong-its actually called green tripe and its the stomach and the stomach contents all ground up together-yuck- and they say it smells really bad. I have not bought any yet and tried it, was thinking of trying some next month because they say the dogs love it and its really good for them.
there is a website greentrip.com that you can check out. Unless you have a butcher shop in your town that would let you have a stomach from the next cow they butcher-I just dont have the nerve to get one and chop it up!!

wow- ok, lol, thanks Cathi and Kathy. I will keep that in mind I've tried the traditional soup menudo once at a new years party... but decided it just wasn't something I felt good eating, lol.
I heard a story (and this could be total myth) that a man was stuck on a small boat for a couple of weeks, and survived by eating fish (that is far condensed, but is the basic concept). The interesting thing was that he stopped craving the "meat" of the fish, and craved more of the organs because of whatever vitamins, etc. were contained/retained there. As I said, no idea if there's any truth in this story, but i remembered hearing it when reading about feeding tripe/organs.

Funny you mention that story!
I was watching the Discovery Channel the other day and a show on extrordinary human survival came on. The guy that this happened to was interviewed. He talked about how he just started to crave the other stuff, like eyes, brains, organs and skin. His brain told him that they were good to eat by giving him a sensation, similar to eating chocolate, every time he did. He survived months.. Can't remember how long..
Very facinating! Reafirmed that I am dong the right thing by feeding whole prey. There are nutrients that they need in the organs.

I found this site: Feed Your Dog
It says to not mix food groups or protein in a meal. "Remember, the best way to feed is not to mix the food groups or protein sources. Best is to feed only chicken one meal or only hamburger & organ meats one meal or only vegetables for one meal with an egg yolk to make it tastier."
I don't remember seeing that here but maybe I missed it. Do all of you hold to that thought?

I feed together and seperate, depends on what is in the fridge. When I use THK, they get one meal of that with their organ meat, yogurt, salmon oil and E, then the other meal is their meat meal.
I would never feed kibble and raw together though.
Did it give a reason why not to feed together? I have never had an issue, ever.

No, they don't support that thought of not mixing foods, so I don't know.
Does anyone feed cornish hens? It seems you could just feed the whole hen.

I feed cornish hens.....I get them for the grocers price and not full price though. They are spendy right out the meat case.
PERFECT for feeding puppies. Just toss one in the crate.
I just went and read that site and they talk about giving avacodo and kibble too. I would dismiss that site to be honest.
