After university and a short stint in an office I decided that I would rather like to make physical activity a part of my job. Doesn't always pay well, but at least I do get payed to exersice
One show was about people and their dogs training for search and rescue and the other was about agility trials. Oh, and then there was the whippet lure course... Holy smokes! Over half of the women were huge!
The SAR thing is really too bad. It is not an issue for the group to which I belong, but in general it is hard to be taken seriously on a rescue if you are seen as a liability by the other parties involved.
There are vital places and jobs on SAR teams for all types of people of all shapes and sizes. That said, if you are a front line responder, you better have the fitness and skills to match the environment in which you are working. That is what is fair to the victim, your dog, your team and so on.

Face the facts my friends, most of us need to shed a few pounds
Is right on. I have found that if you take any group of people dog people, cat people, rc people, what ever their hobby is.. You will find that 40% of them are over-weight, 10% are a-holes, and 5% are saints, while the rest fall somewhere in between and even have the ability to slide into one of the above categories - lol.
I do however take care of my dogs before I take care of myself. Much to my chagrin. My girlfriend often jokes that I will spend 25 min preparing meals for the dogs, supplement, vitamins, and so forth. Then come in sit on the couch and say " K, the dogs are fed let's order a pizza!"
I am slowly changing my style - not sacrificing my care of the dogs - just making better decisions for myself.
Jason
Now that tickled my funny bone- especially the a-hole part! The truest things are the funniest things. LOL

Not all are Fat
Me in my youth i trained in Karate for over 10 years six nights a week, the seventh day Sunday i spent riding out Steeplechasers for local race horse trainers, inbetween i worked eight hours a day and ran four miles a day before getting on my motorbike to travel 28 miles to a private Karate lesson with an old Chinse + Japanese Fellow, who was almost like a father
I have never in my life time ever eaten a ham burger or hotdog and my life spans 67 years
I think we are what we eat, Plus the way we look after ourselves
In my sports days i weighed in at 9 stone,6lb now i weigh 10stone,4lb some forty years later
I can still do a handstand and a back flip so No, we Dog people are not all the same

Steve, I'm afraid you are the exception! And now, just to fill up your day, you are training two dogs in schutzhund. I hope I have half your energy when I am 67...

I have lost 15 lbs in the last few months from exercising the dog.
The trick for me is that Im not having to motivate to exercise, my motivation is purely self preservation of my sanity, not to mention preserving my furniture, and molding and shoes and yard lol.

I walk my dogs 10 kms a days in the woods.
Good luck getting my body to be fat.
I think they must be talking about the , hey boo boo, go out in the backyard and take a pee, and then come back in .... dog owners.

After reading this I'm exhausted and ready to head back to bed and I only just got up.
Back flips at 67? Sheesh, I could scarcely manage that at 8 and I'd break in two if I tried it now.
My hat's off to you, Steve. Are you a Malinois in disguise?
True

Thin may be in but fats where its at,
guilty as charge, I take more time to make sure my dogs eat right and exercise than I do myself. I think some of us live vicariously thru our dogs, Bad knees, bum shoulder, ex smoker(going on eleven years) puts a crimp on excercise, the kids and the dogs are the only reason I want to get off my dead a$$
