yup - totally worth the time and money to get a vet who knows his or her stuff
and we're baskin' in the glory of feeding the dog all the fun stuff on the raw diet. Wahoo for the bucket of herring I just got from the docks and put through the grinder!
Thanks for clarifying that there is a difference between environmental/inhalant allergies and contact allergies. I had the impression they were one and the same based on discussions from another GSD forum.
It is definitely good to clear that up in my head.

One possible point of confusion is that dogs carry pollen and other allergens in to their beds and carpet, etc., exacerbating inhalant allergies by putting allergens right there on the fur/carbet/bed to be inhaled 24/7.
I think that some people misinterpret the advice to rinse allergens off the dog's feet and undercarriage. It's not to get the contact with the skin broken; it's to get the allergen out of the dog's breathing air.
