I think you would really be surprised at just how much hydro those large older deep freezers need to run properly. And if they are giving it away for free i'ld be concerned that it might no be working properly, thus using even more hydro. I saw an apartment size freezer on kijiji hamilton for $100. Not too bad, if you can spare the $100 it might save you more money in the long run. Don't complain....TRAIN!!!

I am a bit hesitant about electricity used, especially with an older freezer. I'm a little hesitant to buy a freezer from Craigslist, vs. free, b/c if it doesn't work, I'm out the cash, but I haven't ever seen a small freezer on there for free. If I could find one for around $150 new, that'd be great, but the only ones I've seen like that are in the US. Teagan!

All new refridgerators, freezers and washer/dryers are EnergyWise. They use much less electricity than the old ones. As far as Costco for meat goes.....I do sometimes buy it there for us, and any trimmed pieces used to go to the dog. For chicken I found it much easier to wait until leg quarters go on sale (sometimes for .69 -79 cents a pound) depending on what grocery store and get a bunch then. Regular ground beef can be had on special at times at a butcher for .99 cents a lb. The $10 for a 40lb box of backs is what I paid. I used it to feed the dog and it was used to make chicken stock as well. I have to clean out my freezer as I want to buy a whole lamb and stock up on chicken for my upcoming pup. You can always ask friends too that when they clean out their freezers and "find" "lost meat" ie. "freezer burned", & "gee I didn't know I had that", they give it to you for the dogs!

So you'd be lucky to get 2 weeks out the same for 3 dogs. You should see if this freezer can take a bit more. 5 cu.ft is about the smallest you can get. Depending on how the meat is cut and packaged would make a big difference. Ideally I've found for rotational life a supply of a little over one month works great. If you can figure out what a months supply is for the 3 dogs that is how I would size the freezer if it was me. Another thing. We buy a box of fresh chicken carcasses from a local poultry distributer every 6 weeks or so at around $40 for a 50lb box, so not as cheap as what some of you find, but good in our books. Ground beef we get from Costco usually. Pork breast is usually rather cheap at the grocery store. No going back to kibble here.
