I've had one since june also. I read and incredible amount now- I never seemed to find time before.
I read during my lunch break at the workout room on the cardio equipment, then use the text-to-speech to have it read to me on the long commute home so I can continue the book. If I'm not driving, I've found I can read it in the car without getting motion sickness (never could read in the car before the kindle).
Lots of free or low cost books, which is good, because that "one click" and the wireless is devious.
I used it at the emergency vet earlier this summer, while waiting. Finished my book and downloaded another one right there in the waiting room.
I wish you could read library books on it, like the sony reader, but I like not having to use a computer to get my books.
vickie
I usually embrace technology but I can't warm up to the Kindle concept - I like having a house full of books and bookcases.
Guess I'm just old fashion in that respect.....
Well after having one for a while I still love it. Now I do partially agree with Will. As much as I love the simplicity is is nice to see a full book shelf.
An old thread I know...but.
I've got to come down with Will. Generally I like the concept, however when I buy a book I expect to OWN that book. If I want to sell it, give it away, or simply trash it it's mine to do with as I please. That right shouldn't nor will I allow some third party to decide what is my prerogative.
The same for school texts. I still have a couple from the college years, most though were resold or given away.
We too love having lots of books around and I also get frustrated from time to time on where to put them all. I need to get better at passing them along to someone else, but I "value" them so much I find that hard! However, I don't like having enough book shelves or storage...
Is it correct that some of the downloaded books are only for a specific length of time and then are gone? THAT would really annoy me - if I paid for the down load I would feel as if I purchased the book.
I don't know the rental deals Barbara, but for all intents and purposes that's all one is doing with the Kindle, renting the book for as long as you like......but beyond that, all the 0's and 1's that make the book appear belong to Amazon.
Then of course there is the little matter of them just deciding to delete a book from every queue because of some small oversight on their part, like forgetting to get the dotted line signed by the publishing house or author.
Heck I don't even know if your allowed to resell the Kindle itself! I know you can't sell it with your library intact, I believe you can only have them transferred to your new unit, but you can't sell the books along with the Kindle. Like I said I'm not even sure you allowed to resell the unit at all.....
I do know that Amazon can remove books from the Kindle. Apparently they had some copyright issues with the book (and I kid you not) 1984. And they quietly automatically removed it from any Kindle that had it.
But my brother loves his. And he really loves having the free internet access that comes with it.

That's just creepy!
Did he at least get a refund or a credit? I would be mad if I paid $15 for a "book" and then it disappeared because of their mistake.
