Not to beat it to death, but no one who crates has to carry a crate around with them for the dog's security. It's part of the dog's home just as your bedroom is part of your home.
And of course, many dogs never enter it again after the period of housetraining and manners work.
For me (and I imagine for most owners) it is a huge tool in managing the dog's environment before the dog has learned house behavior.
But a small separate room probably works fine, and tethering to the owner is a big help too.
P.S. I'm with you on taking the dog many many places. This is my idea of socializing.

Thanks for your impute Connie, I guess what ever works, works. Yep. I like the vision of your dog stopping off at each family member's house for a plate of pasta and some chianti .....

If I were to leave my 5mo Rott in a room alone without a crate I wouldn't have a room left or wall standing.Your puppy must be very well mannered.

She would wait in the car for us, with no problems, when we went to dinner or a movie. Unfortuately the law has changed and we can't leave our dogs in the car anymore due to the stupidity of dog owners and parents with their children.
I respectfully disagree with you. Actually I am glad that law has passed. I don't think owners should leave their dogs in car for many hours unless the A.C. is running on. I remember a police dog died from overheating in Phoenix a few months ago because the police officer went shopping with his wife in the mall. If you would leave your dog in the car unattended, then would you leave your kids there unattended as well? What if somebody broke into the car and stole your dog? What will you do when you find out that your dog isn't in the car?
I have brought my dogs in the car; however, I refuse to leave them in there unattended. If I had to go into the store really fast, I usually ask for permission to bring my dog in the store for couple of minutes. If they said no, I always go to other store. Unbelievable I have brought my dog to many places simple because I asked. I don't stay in the store too long either usually less than 15 minutes.

Well Pat, she was easy to train not to chew things in the house other than her toys (unless she finds a shoe or rag someone left out) but we are still working on her not chewing on us!

I understand your thinking and agree that some people don't know not to leave a dog in a car when the weather is too hot. Out her in Southern CA, you cannot bring a dog in any places because of liability laws (unless it is a Pet Store). My dog loved staying in the car and I made sure it was cool, she had water and the window were cracked open....believe me, not too many people would break into a car and try to take a full grown GDS or any bread that is property protective! Even my 40 lb GSD puppy would go besurk if someone tried to break in the car that she did not know. But I respect your option. Thank you

What you said really bothers me. Criminals do not care if your dog barks like crazy in the car, and they still could steal it with no problem. They have stolen dogs out of people's home, anywhere, especially the pit bull. I remember a member from this forum posted a thread about a man tried to lurk a lab or gsd into his truck at lake.
I am really surprised at your comments about criminals that will not steal GSD, or any "protective" breeds. Some owners who trained their dogs in sports like personal protection have had their dogs stolen. Also, I have seen numerous of animal control officers goes into somebody's yard who had to catch an aggressive/terrorital dog had no problem catching them with a pole.

Well, ok, I guess it is not too common out here in Southern CA where I live. I guess if I shopped in South Central LA, there could be a problem, but I live in nice area and only leave my dog in a crowded parking lot near the front of where I am going. Your are correct it could happen, anything could happen anywhere, even in nice areas. I also have a car alarm. Lindsay, I sorry this bothers you, have you had a problem with this type of a loss?

I didn't experience that kind of loss; however, I know people who have. It happened to a couple of people from this forum, and my friends.
You can ask Jennifer Marshall about what happen to Bubba in PM. I can't remember who that guy was but he trained PP dogs and one of his best working dogs was stolen out of his truck at seminar. Something like that happens. My friend who lives in a really nice neighborhood took her cane corso for walking. Somebody must have followed her home and stole him out of her backyard when he went outside for potty break. It happened when she was at home with him. She has alarms, but her backyard is fenced and has a lock gate. Somebody decided to jump over the fence and pick the dog up throw him over.
