Stand up and ignore him until he calms down.
The second he acts even the slightest bit calmer, mark and reward.
Puppies are a pain. Thankfully, its a very small percentage of their life.
Enjoy this happy time, before the hormones kick in and he weighs 80 lbs, LOL.
In the meantime, a british slip-lead may alleviate some of your immediate issues while you work on the larger training picture.
Less fumbling with the collar and leash clip. Just lasso the little turd and away you go.
My puppy just doesnt seem like he is getting enough exercise. I walk him, play fetch, and play tug games but he still acts kind of hyper and or bored. any exercise ideas?
maggie, how much excercise is he getting in a day? he's what, 5 mo old now? are you still working on marker training also?
i've found that, if my pup is exercised a good half hour 2x/day, plus tracking for his breakfast, plus marker-training 2-3x/day, he's more than happy to go into his crate and rest overnight or while i'm at work.plus i give him a frozen shank bone or kong w/peanut butter in it while i 'm at work. (he's 7 mo old on sat., a pretty high-drive workingline GSD).
and when i say "exercise" i mean a walk with fetch games so he travels about 3x the distance i do, lol. hope this helps...
Well before my husband left for Iraq he would walk him in the morning and after work we would walk him together around the block. I am still doing marker training but I really don't know what to mark. I'm marking when he sits, comes, and goes down but he knows all of that. He also gets really bored with his toys quickly. Chews on one thing then wants something else. He just started to whine and bark if I'm not paying attention to him. I can't even eat without him barking at me. Any advice?
Is he crate trained? If you don't already have one, buy a crate and get him used to it.
At your meal time, put him in his crate with a stuffed Kong toy to keep him occupied. Ignore him if he barks.
How much are you exercising him now that your husband has been deployed?
All puppies get bored w/ their toys easily, unless you are playing with them too.
Set aside specific times of the day where you can devote 20 or 30 minutes just to the dog for playing outside. Fetch is a great one to get a pup tired out. You could also try one of these, which requires less participation on your part:
If you need to keep the pup occupied inside, try a bully stick for him to chew on, or fill up a kong toy with wet dog food, cream cheese or peanut butter and freeze it. It'll keep him occupied for a good amount of time.
There are other commands you can be working on, like 'Watch Me!', and 'Touch' that are easy and fun to teach and will keep his brain busy, which can go a long way to tiring a pup out...
