No, I'm sure the alpha wolf doesn't go around or over lower pack members.
Nor does he give them treats for a good sit/down/roll-over, etc.
Nor does he put a collar and leash on them.
If dominance was an issue with a specific dog, yes, I would probably make them get out of the way.
If the dog is a good dog, and you've known him for years, me personally, I wouldn't worry about it. I'd do whatever was easiest for me- be it moving the dog, stepping over him, or going around.

Hey Scott, I think your focusing too much on something very minor.
I do too. It took me a while even to be clear on what the question was (slapping myself for jumping in mid-thread) .... hence my completely unhelpful comments about stepping over and not wanting my dogs (all of whom will hustle not to be in my way and all of whom might hustle in exactly the wrong way as I am stepping over) to trip me up.
Alyssa's answer is good, IMHO. If I had dominance issues with a particular dog, I'd be focused on that kind of question (and many others), clarifying throughout every day who's in charge.
Otherwise, I'm with Scott on filing it away in the same circular file with the daily-alpha-roll-for-GP stuff.
She howls for a full minute after I leave the house. I hear her from the driveway.
My husband thinks its the funniest thing in the world. I've tried everything in the world to get her to howl, and the ONLY time she'll do it is when I leave.
I guess the wolf biologists would call that a "locator howl".
