The barrier to keep the dog in the back protects the driver from flying dog, but the larger the space the dog is confined in, the further he can fly in case of an accident. So it's sure safer than no barrier or other restraint, but not as good as a crate or belt.
That said, I currently do not restrain my dogs in the car. I have to put the back seats down just to fit them inside, and that leaves the latch bar inaccessible.
I'm planning someday to build a "dog box" trailer, musher style, only bigger compartments for my big dogs. That has to be a reality before we add a third dog to the family. The trailer option makes for a more efficient commuting vehicle the other 6 days a week we're not taking the dogs with us over just getting a bigger vehicle. The dog boxes are also designed for good air circulation, so you don't have as many heat worries leaving the dogs in there as with a car. (Although drop chains are a more humane option once you get to set up camp.)

Guess I'm going to be one of the 'guinea pigs'. I just went online & ordered a harness system from Champion. We'll see what happens!
BTW, I DID pay with a CC, just in case!

I have the Ruff Rider Roadie (elite): http://www.ruffrider.com/shop/product/6
Seems like the Ruff Rider and the Champion are the only canine seat belt systems that have been through any kind of testing at all. Normally my GSD rides in his crate, but one of our cars is too small for a crate so he wears the seat belt in that car. The worst thing is he knows how to get out of it. He will shrug his shoulders tight, tuck his head down and back right out of it by pulling it inside out. I just have to keep my eye on him, & when he starts to shrug I make him cut it out. This dog though, is a Houdini, he can open gates, open crate doors, open kennels, open fence gates, everything has to be locked with a clip lock. He's also really good at climbing chain link fences.

Thanks Jessica, I will check into it. Down here there a lot of people I know are getting tickets for tinted windows....I really like the idea, but don't want to get a fixed ticket and then have to take them off. Anna

I do get ticketed for the tinting also, BUT it is only for the front windows. Also, the screens are only on the back windows. It would be a safety issue for them to be on the front.
I tint only because I like the way it looks. Nothing more. It does hide the screens, but I have the back windows down most of the time now since they can't be sticking their fool heads out the window while doing 75 mph. If you would not want to tint, you certainly would not have to.
BTW: I have now been officially banned from tinting my front windows. My live in police man has put his foot down.

I also ordered a harness this weekend. I got a funny email along with my order confirmation stating that 'this email is no longer valid, etc'. I called this morning and left a message to return my call by the end of the business day today.
...it looks like I may be making a trip to Denver sometime soon. *grr*

I was wondering about this recently. I like the short leash that goes into the belt buckle clip. But, what are you guys doing to protect your rear seats? I'm thinking of maybe making a custom deal with foam and cloth from WallyWorld.
I can't get a crate in my '94 corolla wagon either (yeah, I know. Not a cool car but it's paid for and runs:-)
My wife has a '93 Corolla wagon. Talk about slow.

Scott, I REALLY like what Jennifer linked to above, and it is on my list of purchases. I will be getting the custom one that includes a floor cover (Quinn insists on laying down there).
For now, to protect the leather from claw marks, I have a ½ inch thick foam yoga mat I got at Ross for $15, then cut to fit. I will also put a generic seat cover over the whole thing, but it never stays right because of my rear head rests, so it is usually just the yoga mat. If you take a look at the picture of the inside of my car, you will see why I am SO glad that is there. Note the FIVE MILLION claw marks in that thing!
