I'll advised, quite possibly. And I still do have almost a year to think about it. I was focusing on it today because I had to make copies of the certificate for travel purposes, and was thinking about what would happen when the vaccine comes due, and how I could handle that. I absolutely abhor the idea of repeating the vaccine.
It's quite unlikely that my dog would have an opportunity (or an inclination) to ever bite anyone, though I never say never. I've become quite used to paying additional fees for intact dogs. If they want to charge extra for that, let them have at it. The fee has no health-related ramifications, they are just annoying. I wish they'd accept titers or something for vaccines though, especially since NO dogs have tested positive in at least ten years. What the hell?
I wish I could find success by just being openly confrontational and tenacious.

I got Luc done (he was, uh, overdue) to take him across the border and then NOBODY, going either way, asked for proof of it. I was pissed. Not only did I get him vaccinated, which I wasn't thrilled with, but I paid like $200 (to be fair, that included heartworm testing and meds, so okay, I paid like $90, but you get my point. I was like 'dammit, I don't even agree with this vaccine! SOMEBODY look at the stupid papers!)! I did some more research and I think the US views Canada as a rabies-free zone.
I've been asked a number of times to produce vaccination records going into the US (both at Michigan and NY borders). Sometimes they don't ask. I'd say they don't ask about 30% of the time and the other 60% you'd better produce some documentation or you get turned back (and then just TRY and cross the border again in that vehicle once it's been turned back!) - so, it's a good thing you had his vaccination papers, trust me
when I license the dogs, they ask if the dog is fixed (I pay $60 to license Neb because he's intact, twice what Luc and Teagan cost), but not if they're vaccinated. There's nothing there about it at all. So I don't think it's a huge focus, at least here
Licensing laws are municipal. In my town, the dog being neutered is optional (you just pay more for intact animals), but having the rabies vaccine is NOT optional (except if you have an exemption letter from your vet stating that the animal is under veterinary care for illness). no vaccine = no license = animal control paying you a visit (and yes, they do door-to-door inspections, sigh). So if you don't need to vaccinate your dogs to licence them, that's awesome. I do not know if there is a provincial requirement for rabies vaccines.

With the exception of that lot of states that leave vax protocol up to county rule, I find it really strange that a handful of states have requirements for dogs but don't have ANY rabies vax requirements for CATS - and especially VT, where a LOT of cats are regularly outdoors and frequently encountering wildlife (either hunting it, or being hunted BY it)... maybe statistically it's not such a big issue..? Though if Kristel's research is correct, it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue with dogs in VT either...

I figured that was the case. If I hadn't had Luc's papers, they would've asked, and we would've been turned back. But I was just there, holding his papers with the passports, and I was SOOO disappointed that nobody wanted to see them! I got them special and everything!
(I actually thought the US border guard didn't SEE Luc, who was totally quiet, but Toby assures me he did)

LOL... and you just KNOW they would have asked, but only if you DIDN'T have them.

I have been asked for rabies certification at the border coming back into the US, at AKC events and at campsites. This is probably my biggest concern: being 'caught out' in one of these circumstances.
What do you all do about competition?

I don't do AKC events, only SCH and breed type events. I have never been asked in these venues.. But just in case I have my documentation...
I don't want to be bad, so it is on a don't ask/don't tell deal for me...
