As a Canadian I am very limited in what I can use (we don't have frontline available here, or comfortis or any of the other products mentioned other than Advantix and one other one that I think starts with an I). Something about the pesticide laws. Anyway, has anyone had success with flea collars from say, Zodiac? My poor little female is flea hypersensitive and the neighbourhood cats are spreading them.

Flea collars overall are junk. I'm surprised they're even still kept on the market.
If you're having a problem with fleas that badly you're better off getting the zodiac environmental spray, DE, or better yet repelling those disease bearing cats out of your yard. Advantix is a halfway decent product. I'd just use that combined with some kind of yard spray.
I have not yet seen a flea collar (and I look up research and alerts on each one as I hear of it) that didn't have a huge problem (well-publicized) with either a very dangerous main ingredient or with complete ineffectiveness.
The reason I shaved Quincey, which is a double coated shi tzu, is because he was hot and it was a pain to comb. I had no trouble combing him to keep the mats out. He never had mats. I kept him combed 2 x a day. I thought it also be easier to get rid of the fleas and be easier to see them before it got bad. It would be a dream to be able to have him in a full coat, but I doubt it would work. It does'nt matter, I now found a haircut that works for him, and is also cute. He has long hair to floor on his legs, semi-long hair on ears, face, and tail. The rest is cut very short, not shaven bald. If I could figure out how to put a picture on my site, I would show you the cut.

... I have been told by a friend, that all hartz products are very bad for all animals.
This may sound like a sweeping statement, but I agree; I won't buy anything from this company that makes the continually-recalled products (not just flea stuff: vitamins, rawhide, treats .... ).
Yeah, Hartz is junk, but Zodiac is supposed to be good. I use their flea shampoo and like it (although my vet says that any soapy water would kill fleas, so, whatever).
I will see if I can find the environmental spray.
Anyone had any luck with cedar/juniper oil? I've heard it's effective but have never tried it... anyone?
Thiosulphate is the chemical in garlic that is toxic to dogs. In onions its in a concentrate of about 2% which can be fatal to dogs in garlic the amount is about .03% per clove but since its in garlic they auto ban it. Your dog of 50 pounds would have to ingest near 50 cloves of garlic to have any side effect. That much garlic would effect anyone I think. So use the garlic it'll help..
