I apologize, yes actually I can read but I was responding more to the majority of responses than to the question at hand. I should have put my comments as a reply to one of these... I don't have any experience with web forums, but have plenty of interest in dogs. Maybe I'll learn. Sorry to annoy you with my ignorance.

I would bet the littermates of my Dad's dog are having just as much luck in life as if they were registered German Shepherds.
If you'd go back to the first page here, though, you'd see that this view of where large-breed crosses end up (small breed too, but large crosses are far less likely to be adopted out) is wishful thinking.
Here's one way to look at it. No matter whose numbers you prefer to take: the national numbers, such as those from the ASPCA, which some believe are "enhanced" to boost a spay/neuter campaign, or those from the Tufts/Purdue team who re-examined the stats and produced what they believe is a realistic uninflated picture because they didn't like the way the shelter-org PTS numbers were being used to bludgeon breeders ... no matter which, you have at least 4 million dogs entering shelters every year and 2.1 million of those put down. Bare minimum.
What group do you think fares the worst in that PTS number?
Do you volunteer in a sizable shelter? Have you ever? Because just that experience alone would equip you with the answer like a snap of your fingers.

I also want to add, not to beat anyone up but just to make a point, that this is one of the most politically incorrect boards around.
BUT.
But, this board's members care about dogs, from their own dog all the way up to the big picture of the problems with all casual breeding and BYB.
It's quite possible to rescue and love a large mixed-breed (or shouldn't-have-been-bred pure breed) dog and still understand that this one rescue is a drop in the ocean of abandoned/surrendered/PTS dogs just like him.

Well yes Lana, it was a rhetorical question. Me, I can't spell.
If you do a bit of research on the board (note the search window upper left) you'll find what we think of back yard breeders of any ilk, weather they're breeding pure lines or mixed. It doesn't matter, back yard breeding for whatever reason is just a bad practice on so many levels I don't have the time or inclination to start listing them. It's just plain bad, period.
I'm sure if you parse this thread a little more carefully you'll see that is where the posters are coming from. No BYB. Zero, nada, none ever never if we can help it.
I'm glad your family has a good dog.

ok, I know when I'm beat.. but I also know that I've picked up 2 'lost, abandoned, dumped?" dogs in the last couple years near our home and they were both certainly pure bred dogs. Actually one was dumped we ended up figuring out and the second was 'lost' but had a very poor owner (that one was a boxer with AKC papers). And I know people that are great dog people who honestly want a certain mix. I know there is a serious problem out there, but I don't think it is right to insist everyone be locked in a box over it either. I guess I'm trying to say that no doubt your POV is generally right on, but don't make a religion out of it either. There are exceptions. I think. But don't worry, no one is having puppies at my house.

Lana, no one here thinks that pure-bred dogs are not abandoned or surrendered.
The guy mentioned in the O.P. was planning on a casual let's-breed-to-some-dog-before-spaying large-breed cross, which I was pointing out was in the group of "least likely to succeed" with avoiding shelters and the final needle.
Casual breeding, period, pure or cross, stinks.
