Hello again. What he said was that one of the pups got stuck during birth, and that the mother rolled on the other three. He said he's had litters of 11 where 11 survive and litters of 9 where only 4 or 5 survive.

EWwww.... A old friend of mine breeds a fair number of dogs. In the past decade she has whelped somewhere around 200 dogs. Her losses are fifteen last I spoke with her, and has lost one bitch due to eclampsia (but saved the litter). Her set up isn't fancy, but it is indoors in a spare bedroom.
There is something wrong with this person's set up to have an acceptable track record like that. If I had to guess I'm guessing they are whelping in a area that's without heat control like in a converted barn or something because consistently raising an entire litter really isn't that hard.
