No supplements yet. I won't start that until he's completely adjusted to the addition of the raw chicken. If and when I do, I may add some salmon oil and vit E. Although I plan on leaving him on the combination of THK and raw so supplements shouldn't be absolutely necessary.
BTW, I saw another GSD pup today that was 5 months old and Dom is 3 times his size easily! I was afraid he was too small for his age but now I don't think so. He definately could use more meat on his bones but we're going to continue to work on this. I will just keep slowly sneaking in the calories and healthy fats : )

Fish oil (and the E it uses) provides long-chain Omega 3s that are in very short supply in modern diets, for more than one reason. (However, a big factor is grain-fed slaughter animals replacing grass-fed and wild in the diets of both humans and dogs.) It's an unusual diet that isn't heavily weighted towards Omega 6s and short on 3s.
I'm so glad it's going great. Keep us posted!

adding salmon oil PLUS vit e will be beneficial to your pup. if you do nothing else re: supplements, do those 2!!
i agree that you should wait until he's solid on the raw+THK; you only want to change one thing at a time in his diet so if a problem occurs you'll know the likely culprit. but i would start the salmon oil + vit e asap. you will want to add both at the same time however (i know, it's contradictory), as the vit e enables the dog to utilize/produce the omega 3's. (do i have that right, connie?)

Vitamin E gets used up in processing any oil supplement, so we add it with the oil in order not to create an E-shortfall.
It's true that we can individually lab-test for this (E deficiency from oil ingestion), but we don't (or I don't! ), and E for dogs has not been shown to have a toxic level the way other fat-soluble vitamins do, even in super-high lab dosages. Of course, I don't and wouldn't give those super-high lab doses anyway ...

Just wanted to update you guys- Dom has gained TWO pounds in 10 days!! That seems incredible! I weigh him about once a week. He USED to gain about one pound every 14 days. I can already see how good this new diet is agreeing with his system!
I found a supplement on closeout for $2. Used for be over $20...
It is called Vita-Derm, by Natural Care Veterinarian's Best (pretty good brand). Here is the ingredient list:
-Fish oil, vegetable oil, lecithin, d-Alpha-Tocopheryl, fish liver oil, liver flavor.
Analysis per Teaspoon:
Crude Fat: 95.5%
Linoleic Acid: 55 mg
Vitamin A: 200 I.U.
Vitamin E: 12 I.U.
Is this worth giving to him? It may be good to use to work him up to a higher dose of Fish Oil and E. From what I understand, this dosage might not be high enough for him? His recommended serving size is 3 teaspoons for his weight. It seemed like a good deal for the price. I'm a bargain-sniffer.

I would have picked this up and put it right back down. What is the amount of fish oil? Is the vegetable oil corn oil? I would need to know how much was liver oil (although I could probably compute it backwards, roughly, using the Vitamin A measure). "Fish flavor oil"?! "Liver flavor"?! No analysis of what kind of fish; no analysis of the amounts of EPA and DHA (I don't care much at all about the LA amount).
Nothing would have prompted me to buy this --- except maybe (and only maybe) the $2 price tag. Fish oil isn't cheap, though. And that list represents the worst of the no-info/ bad-info examples.
This is sold as a shed-ender and coat supplement, not as a real fish oil, but I probably would not buy it for any reason.
You asked.

I just wanted to update everyone-- It has been only 3 weeks since I took Dom off of kibble. Dom has gained SEVEN POUNDS in that time! That's more weight gain per week since I have had him. He now eats raw solely, with THK only used as a gravy a couple times a week for the veggie content. This switch has gone very smooth with no diarrhea at ALL since the kibble went away!
Thank you EVERYONE that gave your advice! You armed me with enough knowledge to firmly stand my ground and make this change happen! And now Dom isn't a bony little skeleton dog- he says thank you too! In fact he's figured out that he's now heavy enough to make ME yelp when he steps on MY foot!
I have learned more in the last few months about canine nutrition than ever! And this fits soooooo well with my Type A/control freak personality that its like therapy! lol

Welcome to the club.
The great thing is that there's always more to learn... and honestly, it never gets old.
Congrats, and well done!! Dom is one lucky (and dangerously handsome) pup!
