My dog was neutered about a month ago. He's two years old and a cryptorchid so I had no choice but to neuter. If this wasn't the case I probably wouldn't have done it. His personality hasn't changed at all thus far. It was a long recovery for him but he seemed to bounce back. I was actually looking forward to a "personality" change but he's still annoying if he doesn't get proper exercise. His drive hasn't gone down at all.
I know many, many dogs in which this is the case (no noticeable temperament changes after neutering), so I honestly always hesitate before talking about my experience with Oscar, but I truly believe his "personality" changed a fair amount after his neuter.

Change in 'drives' is one of the main reasons that people doing protection dog sports or PP (like LE K9s etc) don't neuter or spay their dogs. They need those hormones to perform at their peak. I will also add that most owners that partake in these activities usually have a great deal of training time & $$$ invested in the training & purchase of these dogs & are in many cases more dilligent than the 'average' pet owner in maintaining containment of these animals. No insult intended to the many pet owners that are dilligent about their dogs but I refer to the AVERAGE owners that can't even properly train or contain neutered pets, nevermind properly maintain an intact animal.
Absolutely Anne, my personal experience is entirely related to companion animals, not competition or sport dogs, so when I say I know a lot of dogs who were not affected by altering, I mean "pets" (many of whom aren't getting even enough exercise and mental stimulation to be good couch potatos, so it's easy to perceive excess energy as drive and motivation) . The dog in the OP did not sound like a sport dog (though his owner seemed plenty responsible). I suppose context is pretty important here...
...like, how much drive does Randy actually need down there in the wine cellar?
*Nice to see you back Alyssa. The forum's gone all wonky since you left - we've resorted to sharing pictures of adorable baby chickens, and Michael Wise has gone and gotten a photo of his face woven into a cotton blanket!!

I have to say, the whole 'picture blanket' thread was by far, one of the funniest things I have seen in such a long time.
I remember almost choking and spitting out my morning coffee while seeing "The Blanket"
It really cracked me up! Gotta give Michael creds for that for sure!
