.... Man Connie, way to ruin the dog's fun!!! That is a good article though. Guess we'll have to keep the windows up most of the way so he can only sniff the air. When he gets mad I'll tell him it's Connie's fault! Thanks for the helpful info!
Please use a fake name when you tell him. I don't know ... some other name .... "Scott" or something like that. Maybe "Joy."
I knew you used a Champion-type system and meant only the face-exposed-to-wind thing ....
.... but I'm still glad everyone came up with the other concerns for other readers because I have seen way too many projectile-missile as well as ejected-from-car and hanged-or-dragged potentials on the freeway. It really scares me, and I see it all the time.
I'll use a fake name, but Joy? Don't think he'll fall for that - he really likes the windows down!
BTW, in case anyone needs a good tethering system for the car, this is the one we got from Leerburg http://leerburg.com/1268.htm It is a really good system - well made with good little features so it fits different scenarios, the dog can't get tangled up in it and the harness part makes them feel really secure (Kasey didn't like our Audi for some reason, only the SUV, but once we put this in he's fine with it). We give it 2 thumbs up.

So a couple of years ago... I came back from Iraq and decided that I *had* to have my GSD puppy, after years of waiting.
I get said puppy, and decide Search & Rescue sounds fun, so I head up into the mountains with the local K9 SAR group. And I'm riding along with this woman and her GSD in her Prius, and she's lecturing me about how I need to start obedience early, and this and that about dog safety, and suddenly she looks in the rear view mirror, and her dog is no longer in the back seat.
The dog was standing about 50 meters back in the road, where he'd jumped out of the window.
"He's never done that before."

Turbo's last time hanging his head out a window ended with him jumping out of my jeep windo after a squirrel.
We were going less than 10 mph, but the jeep was lifted VERY high. The bottom of the window was probably about 5 feet off the ground. He is about 10 inches tall.
I stopped quickly and jumped out to find him very dazed in the middle of the road. About five seconds later he got his wits back and took off to where he had last seen the squirrel.
He isn't very smart, and I don't think he learned his lesson. I'm pretty sure he would try again.

Crates can create a false sense of security. A few years ago, Will or someone else posted a link to a German TV news clip showing what happened to a dog crate in a moderate speed crash.
It wasn't comforting.
... found the video on YouTube,

or

(The second looks like some kind of advertisement.)

how the heck did I miss that? I've been trying to transition my dog into the back seat but (since we had a loooot of carsick issues when he was a puppy...all of which were solved by simply moving him up front with me) he's had some trouble adjusting...that is just what we need so he can move around but still be secure!

After seeing what happened to a horse's face when battered by a big truck's side view mirror, no, my dogs (nor my horses)will be allowed to hang their heads out of the windows. My dogs stay in the cargo area behind a barracade. Turns out when you test drive new vehicles, bring a crate with you. Mine won't fit in the Jeep, it looked like it would, the measurements said it would, the window slants just enough that it won't (never said I knew how to work a tape measure...lol)
(BTW, the mirror face horse didn't survive)

Falcon's crate is jammed, wedged, shoved into the back of my Honda Pilot. It barely fits, but I love the fact that it is slam TIGHT against the sides of the car. He is NEVER lose in the car. Period. Ooooph... Can't even begin to imagine what it would feel like to have to hit the brakes and have that beefcake slam into the back of my neck, let alone what would happen to him.

I have before. But, normally on 25 mile per hour back roads and that don't happen to much.
I really never ride with my windows down thou. I either have the heat on, or the ac on. LOL. Because of that I have really never thought to much about the health problems involved. But, there have been some great points made in this thread.
That being said. I want to get a Harley and get a side car for it. Then get my dog a Red Barron helmet and goggles, train him to wear them, strap him in, and cruse around town. LOL
That would be epic.
Okay, so saying stuff like that out loud makes me feel like I might have slight problems. Lol.
Harley Riders here! My father-in-law used to have a bagger (electroglide) with matching side car. Purple and ice. Sweet bike, but anyways. According to Hubby who helped his dad with his Harley does make a side car, but you have to get it custome painted to match the bike. Alteast thats what happened by us.
I would NOT recommend letting the dog ride in the side car. First off leather interior and dogs claws. Not fun. Second is that they really aren't all that safe believe me. You have a pretty small seat in that thing, and a dog can't really stretch out his legs like a human so that also stinks.
But I have seen a fully enclosed side car with windshild and a door that opens on the side. That was some slick .... anyways if your going to do it, I would do it that way. Get an enclosed side car, you will have to have it speacially made and attached to your bike. Make sure you really want those side cars cause if you take a turn to sharp the whole thing can and will lift of the ground.
If it were me, I would do a hot rod or street rod that was enclosed. Something like this!
Side note: older guy took him 16 months to build this thing, but If your gonna go big.. go this big! If I remeber the details correctly this is an indian cheif front end, with a v8 motor in it. In the pictures it is red, but now its granny smith green.. *drools* sorry car/hot rod/truck (pulling or mud truck)/ motorcycle nut. Blame my upbringing!
So heres the pictures Dave I hope you get some ideas that would definitly work for your pooch and draw a Heck of alot of attention! Also sorry if the graphics are kinda pixily, took them with a camera phone.

Hubby commented side note: He said He personally would not do the dog in the side car. He's been to too many motorcycles ralleys where he's seen the dogs get hurt. Also commented they usually dont have windshields unless its enclosed. Depending on the area, 60 - 75 mph june bugs hurt like a son of a gun.
Hope you enjoy the pictures!
Mary

No we don't do the windows all the way down either, an inch or two so they can just get a sniff. Around here we have a lot of dogs that people put in the back of pick up trucks, that just freaks me out. I have saw the aftermath of one that was tied to the inside of the open bed, he fell out or jumped out but since he was connected to the truck he was dragged-drug (too late to use the correct grammar. An awful, awful sight. He lived, but shredded.
We do snow sliding down hills on a sled, that can be a lot of air in the face...
