Kelly, did you do any loud-noise-desensitizing beforehand?
Connie,
Drift didn't really need any sound desensitization... every Wednesday at work we have music therapy. That means a bunch of 6 year olds making LOTS of noise in the next room
In the Therapy Dog class we took there were exercises for noise distractions though. Knocking on the door, dropping things on a metal floor, etc.
If anyone is interested in certifying a therapy dog, I would highly recommend a class that will introduce the dogs to different situations the dogs may come across being therapy dogs. Introduction to the wheelchairs and people on crutches was important for Drift, these are not things we normally come across every day.
Great recap Kelly. And it’s easy to see how the dogs must possess those “special qualities”, specifically love for and a comfortable trust in all people. Thank you for sharing your experience.
