Ok, and another oldy but goody series (again, for kids)
'Big Red' and the others in the series, by Jim Kjelgaard. About an Irish Setter...
(eta: Whoops, I missed that Kristen already posted the Big Red series!)
Can you tell that we were all dog lovers as kids!
(I wanted a collie so badly after reading all those Albert Payson Terhune books...probably a wise move that my parents nixed that one)

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Best. Dog. Novel. Ever.
I. Agree.
However, there is a long thread here about that awesome book, and many were/are very unhappy with a part of it that I will not mention in a thread where not everyone has read it. And I know no one else will.
Folks who want to see the thread can search for it and find it easily, having been forewarned that the thread is loaded with spoilers (spoiler warnings in the thread itself too).
I also was absolutely enthralled and in love with with Watchers and have read it more than once.
Ditto! Ditto! Ditto. the author's got an amazing "read" on dogs. I find myself looking at my dog while reading these books and wondering if he thinks like Chet.
Warning, though: Do not read Dog On It in bed at night unless you live alone and have no close neighbors. There would have been no way for me to get through that book without actual tears-in-eyes laughter.
With other people who have read it, we often quote Chet's statements and laugh really loud ... and then top each other with more Chet-isms.
Not to mention, as Meredith says, constantly thinking "Oh, so THAT'S how dogs think about that," completely immersed in the belief that Chet is writing his POV.
